Remembering Judy Garland on Her 90th Birthday

Born Frances Ethel Gumm in Grand Rapids, Mich., Judy Garland was born 90 years ago today, June 10, 1922.  She sang with her two sisters, Mary Jane and Dorothy Virginia, as part of the Gumm Sisters, who worked the vaudeville circuit for many years in the 1930s.

Though most identified with the "The Wizard of Oz,"  the singer-actress went on to make more than 20 films.

She later made several movies with Mickey Rooney, including "Andy Hardy Meets Debutante," below, 1940.

Garland was married five times.  She had three children, including singer-actress Liza Minnelli.

After suffering a nervous breakdown, attempting suicide and developing a drinking problem, Garland reclaimed her stardom in 1954 in the musical remake of  "A Star Is Born." A one-season television series, "The Judy Garland Show," followed in 1963.

Judy Garland performed in Copenhagen, Denmark, in April 1969, above, just a few months before her death of an accidental drug overdose at age 47.
