Ben Hambay's surveillance video shows what appears to be his former girlfriend throwing a plate of food over a fence to his dog, saying, "I brought you a treat."

That treat was a deadly mix of rat poison and bologna.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's office in New Mexico is searching for a motive as to why Vickie Black may have tried to kill 4-year-old Bo, a lab/pit mix that she gave to Hambay in the earlier part of their three-year relationship.

"I broke up with her and she had still been coming by to bring Bo dog toys. I never had any problems with her, so I don't know why she would do this," said Hambay.

According to deputies, Black admitted to bringing food to the dog, but strongly denies poisoning it.

"We found a white plate with bologna and D-Con rat poising on it," said Sgt. Sam White.

Hambay said Bo was tied up in the yard late Sunday evening in the South Valley of Bernalillo County when the poison was thrown over the fence.

It was when he got home from work that he untied him and Bo consumed part of what was on the plate.

When Hambay walked over and noticed something was wrong, he called his friend over to induce Bo to vomit, which he believes saved the dog's life.

Black was arrested and charged with extreme cruelty to animals, a fourth-degree felony. Black posted bail and could face up to 18 months in prison along with a $5,000 fine. Attempts to reach her for comment weren't immediately successful.

Hambay said he has not spoken to Black since before the incident and is leaving it to the sheriff's department to press charges.

Hambay said Bo is doing just fine.
