"World News" Dramatically Narrows Year-to-Year Gaps with NBC by Double-Digits in Both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54

For the week of November 5, 2012, the week of the Presidential election, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 8.34 million Total Viewers and a 2.0 rating/7 share/2.32 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. The ABC evening newscast posted its 2nd-strongest numbers of the season in both measures, behind only the previous week's performance with coverage of Hurricane Sandy.

For the 2nd week in a row, "World News" was up year to year in Total Viewers (+1%) and Adults 25-54 (+7%) - 8.28 million and 2.16 million, respectively, on w/o 11/7/11 .

"World News" cut its week-to-week margins with "NBC Nightly News" by double-digits in both Total Viewers (-48% - 764,000 vs. 1.46 million) and Adults 25-54 (-54% - 380,000 vs. 820,000) .

Year to year, "World News" narrowed its gaps with "NBC Nightly News" in Total Viewers (-31% - 764,000 vs. 1.10 million) and Adults 25-54 (-22% - 380,000 vs. 488,000) .

Season to date, "World News" is up in Total Viewers (+2%) compared to the same point last season. In addition, "World News" has narrowed its Total Viewer gap (-15%) with "NBC Nightly News" for the second year in a row to post its smallest gap (629,000) with the NBC program in 4 years- since the 2008-09 season.

"World News" outperformed the "CBS Evening News" by +1.25 million Viewers and by +227,000 Adults 25-54, posting its largest news demo advantage over the CBS program this season.

NOTE: On Tuesday (11/6/12), "CBS Evening News" was coded as a breakout and is excluded from the weekly averages. CBS' averages are based on 4 days (Mon, Wed-Fri).
