Remember he did as his country asked and the fact that the tool he designed has been copied by so many reflects how well he did it. That’s why Eugene Stoner designed the M16 with a chrome lined barrel. Robert McNamara however saw that as a wasted expense. He also thought the gun powder Mr. Stoner recommended to be too expensive, opting instead for a cheaper but dirty burning powder. The combination of the two made the original M16 chamber and barrel get dirty very quickly and jam. If you want to blame someone for the failure of the early M16 the evidence leads straight to Robert McNamara. Mr. Stoner designed a fine weapon but a number cruncher who knew nothing about guns wouldn’t listen to anyone so he made a gun that was unreliable and got good men killed. The Russians however were smart enough to listen to Mikhail Kalashnikov and built an outstanding weapon which is more reliable than any full auto before it with the possible exception of the US M3A1 “grease gun”.
