The story varies... but it does not change the fact that the bike is actually embedded in the tree.
I live on the Pacific NW island where it resides.
What it appears to have happened is: Someone placed the bike on a limb of a tree and the tree grew around the bike.
Enjoy!

Actually softwood trees do in fact elongate in length as they grow. Nail to nails a metre apart and twentey years later they will be a considerable distance further apart. Hardwood trees like eucalypts actually compress as they grow and form stress fractures leading to hollows. In Albury in Australia we had a tricycle that was likewise embedded into a tree that had grown around it. Unfortunately the council built a track near it and instead of leaving ot for future generations to be amused with, vandals tore it to pieces. I was lucky enough to see it originally, unlucky not to have a camera on me at the time.

How this bicycle got up in the tree has been the subject of plenty of local legend around Washington’s Vashon Island. The real story involves a boy in the 1950s who left his bike in the woods while playing with friends, because he didn’t like it. The bike was placed about two meters high in the tree, which eventually grew around it

Trees must grow up as well as out, because the bicycle is now about 6 feet in the air. I visited it last month and it was above my head.

Come to my house and I'll show you a tree that has a bicycle grown into it and another treet with a lawn mower grown into it. Both fully embedded in a tree that is 20 years old.

But the untold side of the story, which is also possible, is that the bike felt lonely after being abandoned in the bush, and in sympathy, the tree adopted her just like anyone would adopt an orphan. It has been stated by some botanists that some milky juices that flow from trees actually have the same chemical formula with human milk - you know, some milk of human kindness flowing in some trees.

A certain hunter has been greasing the bicycle hub to keep it turning for 50 years. When he turns the hub it makes some animal noise that attract other animals to enable him pick his easy targets. Actually this was the real secret of the prize winning hunter's success.

I'm a bit surprised that Diane Sawyer didn't do a follow-up story on this same bicycle last night. It is for sure possible for a tree to swallow a bike like that, but the bike would have had to been hung 5 feet up the tree originally. Trees grow out, not up. Diane left her viewers thinking that she believed the story about the boy leaving his unwanted bike leaning against the tree. Shame on her for not clearing the air on this story.
