“GMA” Outdraws NBC’s “Today” to Lead the Week in Total Viewers, Ranking No. 1 in All 14 Weeks of the Season to Date

Season to date, ”GMA” Stands as the No. 1 Morning News Program in Both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54

For the week of December 31, 2012, “Good Morning America” drew 4.814 millionTotal Viewers and a 1.5 rating/11 share/ 1.778 million Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  “GMA” outdrew NBC’s “Today” (4.572 million) by+242,000 to lead the week in Total Viewers, ranking No. 1 in all 14 weeks of the season to date.  

“GMA” built on its Total Viewer count by 3% compared to the year-ago week (4.666 million on w/o 1/2/12), while NBC’s “Today Show” (-13% -5.264 million) lost viewers.   

“GMA” claimed the week’s No. 1 morning telecast with its Thursday airing (1/2/13) in Total Viewers (5.015 million).  “GMA” has held the week’s most-watched morning telecast in all 14 weeks this season.

Season to date, ”GMA” stands as the No. 1 morning news program in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54. In fact, “GMA” is leading “Today” by its largest season margin in overall viewers (+509,000) in more than 21 years, and in the key adult news demo(+89,000) in 21 years - since at least the 1991-92 season and since the 1991-92 season, respectively; Nielsen’s electronic database started on September of 1991.

Season to date “GMA” is up in both Total Viewers (+5%) and Adults 25-54 (+1%) versus its year-ago averages, growing the most year to year in Total Viewers and standing as the only morning newscast to grow in the key adult news demo (NBC’s “Today” is down -16%/-23%, respectively; CBS’ “This Morning” is mixed +4%/-3%, respectively).  “GMA” is seeing its largest overall season audience in 7 years and best Adult 25-54 performance in 4 years - since the 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons, respectively.

For the week, “GMA” nearly doubled the performance of “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+90%) and Adults 25-54(+91%).    

Note:  Due to the New Year’s holiday, ABC’s “Good Morning America,” NBC’s “Today” and “CBS This Morning” were coded as specials on Monday (12/31/12) and Tuesday (1/1/13) and are excluded from the weekly averages.  Each program’s averages are based on 3 days (Wed-Fri).
