The pitfalls of apparently mixing alcohol and air travel were taken to a new level when an evidently intoxicated man was constrained to his seat with duct tape on an international flight.

Iceland Air said the man went on a rampage on a New Year’s Eve flight from Reykjavik to New York, hitting, screaming at and spitting on other passengers.

Passengers took matter into their own hands, taping the man to his seat.

Andy Ellwood tweeted a photo of the disruptive passenger that a friend of his, who was on board the flight, had snapped and wrote on his blog that the man became unruly after drinking all of the duty-free liquor on board.

“He was restrained by passengers and crew and was monitored for his own safety for the duration of the flight,” Iceland Air said in a statement to ABC News.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken by police to an area hospital where he was treated for alcohol poisoning. Port Authority police wouldn’t confirm that the man in the picture was the person they took into custody, but  said he had not been charged.

imagine without duct tape, there could have been a major disaster.

Finally they do something that doesn’t affect any of the other passengers. I hear too many times about people acting up and they have to land the plane. IDIOT! Tried to choke a woman? So a violent drunk huh? I’d charge him with assault!

Ohhhhh raging, big deal. That’s a typical flight out of Albany. I need new glasses because I thought it read aging passenger and thought now there’s a damn good idea!

Duct tape….don’t leave home without it.

Posted by: newcountryman | January 5, 2013, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

now if flight attendants were allowed to carry guns they could have just shot him and solved this problem even faster. they were lucky the duct tape held. next time it might not. arming flight attendants is the obvious solution

Who btings duct tape on an airplane?

Posted by: gonzo | January 5, 2013, 5:13 pm 5:13 pm

Taping over his mouth could make him aspirate his own vomit into his lungs killing him. That would be manslaughter or worse.

But apart from that, great idea.

New House Rule : If you need to drink you won`t be flying with the rest of us and the children.
How is it that minors are not allowed in bars or taverns but they are allowed in a confined aircraft space with intoxicated drinking adults that are being served ?

I hope he doesn’t have a reason to sue. I don’t blame the people for duct taping him.

I agree with Gonzo. Tape over an intoxicated persons mouth is an accident waiting to happen. I understand restraining a passenger is necessary, but landing at an airport with a dead passenger is another…!!!

Okay, be honest. Who hasn’t thought of doing that to another passenger?

While duck taped to the seat, what was happening when the drunk wanted to go to the restroom and take a wizzzz.?

It’s truly amazing what we have to put up with in this crazy, turned upside down – inside out world. I’m glad none of the passengers or crew, and even the drunk himself were seriously hurt. Good they restrained the man or there could have been a major disaster. You just never know what nut is going to turn up where or when.

Wow, this is new. Well, here is my take on this. I know the passengers and crew did this to shut him up, but I think they also did it for his own safety. I know they duct taped his mouth, but I doubt they did it to poison him with his own vomit. I do not think they were that heartless. They probably were fed up with him, and I would be too, but it is not as if the man had this behavior throughout the entire them. I think the passengers knew what they were doing when they duct taped him. I do not think they did it out of spite, anger of course, but not spite. I don’t know, it’s just my take on it. I mean, they did leave the flight progress on for him, probably did that to calm him down, or something.

Edit, throughout the entire time, not the entire them, sorry

Well, duct tape don’t fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound. ROFLOL

Liz, you really need to realize there should be more to your life than hating “liberals”. I am finding it strange that so many right wingers are somehow taking this guy;s side. Was it John Boehner or something?

I will just BET that this is not just alcohol intoxication.

This is most likely a case of Ambien being taken with alcohol. There have been several more incidents like this in the past few weeks before and after Christmas.

The same out-of-control rages and then people who seem to be truly flabbergasted at their own behavior when calmed down hours later.

Ambien and several other anti-depressants have been responsible for deaths and rage-related incidents, just from the pills alone, but worsened reactions when mixed with alcohol.

All passengers should atleast get free tickets

If everyone was packing a handgun on that flight, they could’ve just shot him and be done with it. Soon we’ll all be able to legally carry firearms on passenger planes. The more people carrying guns, the safer everyone will be.
