This elk was NOT injured, all horns intact. This was, to me, a senseless shooting only for personal gain. These cops discharged a firearm in a NEIGHBORHOOD!! And tried to lie about it. They said the elk was hurt, again a lie. I live in ColoradoSprings and have seen and heard from folks that live in Boulder, he was an older animal and sometimes just seem to "wonder'' the neighborhood. Yes a wild animal none the less and to be treated as such but to shoot him in broad daylight in a residental area is not right. Local news has stated both officers are on UN paid leave pending investigation.

why are the characters who committed this crime suspended { with pay } for shooting and
killing this magnificent animal and then taking it home for their freezers...and not saying a word
to any of their superiors about it.....with pay

"The Boulder, Colo., community gathered today for a walk to honor an elk that was shot and killed by a police officer two weeks ago."

Sometimes the sentimentality in this country is a bit extreme. I'm not condoning what the officers did but Jesus Christ people. Its an ELK. Its not someone's missing or murdered child.

Fire the Chief, he is a liar covering up. You do not shoot a BULL ELK with a shotgun or slug.... the animal only suffered from the slug, nothing else. There is no reasonable man or woman that is trained as a law enforcement officer that is going to do this without contacting dispatch or a DNR/ Fish n Wildlife Officer. Its in the training and it is protocol. I am sure the whole department is behind this, and the 2 fools that got CAUGHT are going to get off and go somewhere else to abuse the badge, unfortunately abuse more animals and humans. That elk suffered due to that shotgun hit, it is illegal to even shoot an elk with a tag using a shotgun...it is inhumane and cruel. Too kill humane and ethically a much bigger rifle was necessary............but then people would hear the crack! two very different sounds that carry miles.....

Those of you claiming the animal was "injured" are lacking all the facts. If you go to the city of Boulder's police website, as of today there are three news releases about the issue, starting with one on Jan. 3. One of the press releases states the officers talked about killing the elk as early as Dec. 26th in the presence of other officers, so they planned and schemed to do this at 11 pm on Jan. first, a night when a lot of fireworks may still be set off to perhaps cover their gunshot. At any rate, if they knew the animal was supposedly suffering a physical injury, they had several days to call the wildlife officials to take care of the animal--instead, this was a pre-planned abuse of power and authority by law enforcement officers to get themselves a trophy rack and some meet that should have been donated to a homeless shelter or similiar group.

The actions of these weak Colorado citizens could bring harm to their state. Criminals across the country must be thinking about moving there. If a criminal breaks into a house in one of these marshmallow-soft neighborhoods, the odds of him getting lead poisoning is rather low, one would imagine. The number one cause of violence is the ready availability of victims.

When an animal is injured, humane dispatch is better than allowing it to suffer. We had a deer with an injured leg, and we babied him and fed him and the leg just did not seem to improve. In spite of all our best efforts, we saw his remains from a coyote feast. We knew it was him because his linjured eg was distictive. I guess that was more "natural" but I don't think it was a easy to endure as one shot and it was over. It is called survival of the fittest.

It was injured. They shot it and put it out of its misery thereby doing it a favor. Do ANY of you understand wildlife at all. Most of you "walking" twits think that it would be ok to pet a grizzly or wolf because they look cute. Ha, please do. As far as them taking the meat. There was probably a procedure in place that would have given it to a food shelf but cops don't make that much. So if he wanted the meat, let em have it.

Really people, it was an injured animal for God's sake. They shot it to put it out of its misery, the only thing they really did wrong was to not report it.
