These poor, poor parents. This is sickening. That girl is absolutely adorable. I agree that there should be some sort of a discussion between parents and the teacher for how to handle potential situations that need to be addressed. But THE NERVE of ANYONE laying a hand on that girl in such a manner is atrocious. It is disturbing. No one has the right to do anything to a child that is not theirs besides holding their hand, or helping them TIE their shoes. I honestly think their could be a court case here and I hope that teacher endures consequences. Mr and Mrs Searcy, your daughter makes me smile just looking at the picture. Don't let this slide by.

ok, I have been a teacher for years, and I have had students with special needs mainstreamed in my classroom AND on occasion we have had problems with shoes being taken off and thrown during fits. BUT I never, at any point even briefly thought about taping shoes on feet. I have, with parents approval taken hard shoes and put them away and replaced them with slippers. I have told students that if they do not leave their shoes on they would not go outside for recess, and I have made many, many, many calls and visits to parents. AND I HAVE NO TRAINING in teaching special ed. What kind of special education program is this school running. I would be at the next school board meeting with bells on. I would also be canvasing other parents to see if there are other inappropriate issues.

As far as the middle school teacher is concerned, her moment of stupid had nothing to do with the take or the photo's the kids took, it was her posting photo's of her students online. The only way to combat this is to get waivers signed by every parent of every student in the photo. People, your students are not to be part of your social network life in any way. I feel bad that her moment of stupid could cost her her career, but people need to think before they click.

I drive a special needs bus and I can tell you, they wheeled a kid taped like that out to my bus I would be calling my supervisor telling him about and to get the bottom of it. But I can tell you that would not happen with any of my kids here, the people that work with them would be appalled by this story.

This kid isn’t “special” except to her parents, she’s mentally retarded. As such, she needs to be ina special institution rather than amoungst normal kids that could bully her, and also our limited economic resources need to be spent on the people that can benefit the most. This kid should either be home schooled, or at a special school for the mentally retarded

Then our limited economic resources should not be spent on those as yourself. From reading your post here your mental development stopped many, many years ago.

Maybe the girl was trying to run away so they taped her feet to protect her. You just never know

** Whoeverduct taped the feet of a downs syndrome child should be prosecuted as well as have his/her teaching credentials revoked. As for a principal who "doesn't know who did it" should also be suspended.
** The teacher in Ohio should not be held responsible for what her students chose to do to themselves.
** The mother (Ferguson) who duct taped her 2 yr old to a chair should be prosecuted for child abuse and should have ALL of her children taken away from her.

Sounds like Vicki Penn approves of duct taping.... What next, duct tape her to her seat when she gets up to often? If you are a teacher, you are what is wrong with the education system in America. Not my job, not my duty, i am here from 8 until 3 everyday now pay me my unsustainable pension.

As long as this young lady can put her shoes back on by herself, no problem with taking them off periodically. If howver, she requires the teacher's assistance to do it, then that is a problem particularly if she is mainstreamed. A teacher does not have the time or energy to repeatedly put student's shoes back on them throughout the day. I worked in kindergarten for numerous years and the goal for every student was to be able to put on their own coat and shoes and secure them by themselves by Winter Break. After the New Year, I did not perform the task anymore for them as it is too time consuming and physically demanding to be doing it with 20+ students in a classroom. Parents need to take care of teaching their children these tasks and make sure they can do them for themselves. A Downs child should not have any issues with learning this task done repeatedly. Teachers have their hands full just trying to teach without all the behaviour issues they also must deal with- I would bet that the tape did not hurt her and hopefully made a lasting impression for both her and her parents about the problem...maybe they never really paid attention before-we really don't know much about it from this article, but I am sure that the adult who did this was tired of repeatedly putting this child's shoes back on. Not really their job-
