While the abuse issue continues to be highlighted by the press, the reality is that the number of priests involved in the scandal is very low. The coverup by local bishops was misguided and there needs to be a clear policy of referring all accusations to local authorities. In my view, this is not the biggest threat to the church. I believe it is the fact that so many of the people that call themselves Catholic do not practice their faith. They don’t think that it is important to go to Church with their families and they find many of what we are taught irrelevant. Many families only attend Mass while their kids are going to CCD. Once the kids are confirmed, too many times we don’t see them anymore. The Church must find ways to reconnect with its members.

The church needs to be as transparent as possible, and that includes statements showing it’s followers where it’s money goes. For all they know, the Vatican could be amassing incredible amounts of money, or investing it in other priceless treasures. All countries need to be transparent in this matter, even the country of Vatican City.

11 percent said it provides a moral compass. ______________ 11% of still Catholics live in 1921 and have no access to news. Or they agree with the “moral” example being set by Priests and leaders of the Catholic church. Ugh.
