Bridging the Divide: Wilcox County High School Students Hold First Integrated Prom

For any teenager, prom is a monumental night, but for students at a Georgia high school, it has been more than 40 years in the making.

For the first time ever, students at Wilcox County High School, in Rochelle, Ga. danced together at a prom that wasn’t segregated.

For decades, the school board has avoided officially endorsing prom festivities, instead relying on parents to host and control invitations leading to year after year of two dances — one for white students, and one for the black students.

Students have lobbied over the years to end the practice. This year, a group of Wilcox County seniors decided to take matters into their own hands.

The four girls, two black and two white, created a Facebook page asking for support and donations to fund an independent bash open to all.

“We were doing that so we could get the word out, so that some people would be able to donate and help us out with what we were doing,” said senior Mareshia Rucker.

On Saturday night, nearly half of the school’s student body came out to the event.

“Hopefully when everything is said and done, people in our county will really realize, that there is no sense in the way things are right now,” Rucker told ABC News affiliate WGXA.

Despite this year’s groundbreaking integrated dance, once again this year there was a segregated prom attended only by white students.

It wasn’t an officially sanctioned event, but a private one organized by white parents.

Obviously these kids are learning a very important lesson on how NOT to be like their parents! Unbelievable that in the 21st century there are still parents who are supportive of segregation!

I am stunned that this horrible practice still exists anywhere in the us. Just shocking to me that there could still be such a thing as a segregated prom….

How about no more Black History Month (unless we have a white history month) no more Miss Black America (unless we have an all white one) You know it goes both ways here.

This blows my mind. I live in Georgia. I moved a lot and went to three different high schools, and never experienced anything like this. I graduated from high school 10 years ago. Our prom was cultured, diverse, and friendly to anyone and everyone who wanted to come. Segregation was never an issue. Our school had straight couples, gay couples, mixed couples, black couples, white couples, Asian couples, and everything imaginable…and the school board was fine with it. How can it be ten years later, same state (different county, of course), and places like this exist? I just don’t understand.

I have lived to see so much of what Dr. King spoke of and I feel Blessed. I remember segregation and how and why it was justified even by some using the bible. But the Lovings showed the US what God created and the love we all share. Time moved on but it takes the youth to teach God’s lessons. I was not raised racist. My first freshman crush was on a really good looking man running for President because we weren’t allowed to have boyfriends at that age so I just pick John Kennedy because he was always on TV and so cute. Well time has move on and I have seen so many hotties of all races. But now much older I got to meet the cutest Governor name Martin O’Malley and wow we talked and he asked me for a hug I was lost 20 years and felt 45 years old for a few mins. Look your never to old to look and I give credit to a good looking dude. I hope the kids enjoy and spread equality to their children and just maybe the US will look like the Dream Dr. King spoke of for all Americans.

Life will be long and hard for you all that look at another race as inferior to another. Life is about getting along and accepting people of all backgrounds and race. I am still in shock to have read this and feel sorry for those children who are from the families who are still so racist! I am also very proud of the students who took a stand to end this ridiculous practice of having a “separate” prom. A job well done!!!

Just to let those uneducated folks know some FACTS. Bogalusa, Louisiana is 4 times as large as this county.

Wilcox County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,750. The county seat is Abbeville. It is also included in the Warner Robins, Georgia metro area. Wikipedia
Area: 383 sq miles (992 km²)
Founded: December 22, 1857
County seat: Abbeville
Population: 9,298 (2011)

I would really appreciate it if someone could publish the names and identities of the white parents and white students who held the whites-only prom. The parents deserve public shame and approbation and potential employers and colleges need to be aware the white students are racists and probably will commit Title VII violations at any place of employment or college they go to. If we can’t stop racism one way, we can another – through public shame, and making identities of racists public. You can’t hide behind white sheets anymore, morons.

If the school was having a secregated prom it would be illegal because they are probaly using state and federal funds. If white parents are putting on a private party and calling it a prom. then, it is legal, although they should call it a party instead of a prom.

Posted by: Bernie Badon | April 28, 2013, 7:10 pm 7:10 pm

Seriously??? it’s 2013. What is it with our south? You drag a population of people here against their will, you put them in human bondage, and unlike every other country on earth, quite literally, that outlawed African slavery per their own choice, their own reason, you fight a war to KEEP slavery! Your president of your Confederacy releases a speech outling the very ‘foundation’ on which the new nation will be built upon – slavery. Read that speech. We all had to in school growing up, it’s beyond offensive. It’s called the “Cornerstone Speech” by Alexander Stevens. Every American should not be able to graduate high school without reading that speech. Then, against thier will, slavery is outlawed, per se, but the south continues with ‘slavery lite’ for 100 years where blacks cannot vote, cannot live a normal life, cannot get a normal education, cannot get a job outside of maid or services, subjected to live as third rate citizens without the right to vote or hold public office. THEn… in the 1960s, 100 years after slavery, blacks PEACEFULLY (which is amazing) rise up and stand up for their rights and they are…..hung, executed, literally dragged through the streets of their town, fire hoses turned on their children, by again, southern whites. So,,,aFTER ,once again, being FORCED into have a trace of humanity, blacks are given rights, well, sort of, and here we are again, now 50 years after the Civil Rights and only now, 50 years later, can black students go to a dance with whites. I mean….do southerners never grow tired of being despicable?

WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF THE INTEGRATED PROM ON FACEBOOK I WAS SO SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT THIS COULD EVEN BE HAPPENING IN 2013 IN AMERICA. I WORK IN TN WITH A NURSE ORIGINALLY FROM GEORGIA AND SHE ALWAYS TELLS ME “REBEKAH YOU JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW BACKWARDS IT STILL IS IN GEORGIA” BUT I DO NOW.IT IS SO SAD THAT WHITE PEOPLE ( I AM WHITE) HELD A WHITE ONLY PROM FOR ALL THESE YEARS AND AGAIN THIS YEAR LAST WEEKEND. EVEN MORE SAD TO ME IS THAT THE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT WENT TO IT LAST WEEKEND HAVE ALLOWED THEMSELVES TO BE EXPLOITED BY THEIR OWN PARENTS AND FAMILY’S PREJUDICE. I PERSONALLY CONSIDER IT A HUGE FORM OF ABUSE FROM THOSE PARENTS AND FIND DISGUST WITH THE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT WOULD NOT STAND ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY AND REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WHITE ONLY PROM . I IMPLORE YOU THAT WENT TO THAT HORRIFIC PROM TO EDUCATE YOURSELVES AND BREAK FREE FROM YOUR FAMILY’S PREJUDICIAL LEGACY. YOU YOUNG PEOPLE ARE BEING ROBBED OF SO MUCH AND YOU ARE ALLOWING IT. I STAND PROUD WITH THE ORGANIZERS AND EVERY PARTICIPANT THAT USED YOUR PRESENCE AND VOICES TO BRING LIGHT ON THIS AND TO TRY TO HELP MAKE YOUR GEORGIA CULTURE BETTER. THEADMINISTRATION, TEACHERS AND PRINCIPAL AT YOUR SCHOOLS BOTH PAST AND PRESENT ARE ENABLERS. IT IS TIME FOR SOME SERIOUS THERAPY IN YOUR SCHOOL.IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THE CULTURE FOR THE FUTURE NOT JUST FOR PROM NIGHT AND I HOPE YOU WILL MOVE FORWARD TO DO MORE OF THAT.ACTION WAS TAKEN AND ACTION IS WHAT IS NEEDED. TIME FOR SOME GRADUATE STUDY STUDENTS TO STEP UP,COLLEGE PROFESSORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, COUNSELORS TO STEP UP AND PASTORS! STOP LETTING KIDS DO YOUR JOBS CORRECTLY. BE BETTER THAN YOU HAVE BEEN BEFORE- THIS IS THE TIME. YOU CAN DO MORE TO CHANGE THINGS THERE IN YOUR COMMUNITY. OH THAT MAYOR THAT WOULD NOT SUPPORT YOU WITH HIS WORDS- VOTE HIM OUT!!!! RED CARPET IS A COMMON THING AT MANY PROMS- IT IS NOT HOLLYWOOD – EVEN YOUR NEWSPAPER MEDIA NEED SOME 2013 EDUCATION. ORGANIZE A COMMUNITY COMMITEE FOR PROM 2014 NOW AND INVITE ALL THE PLAYERS- ESPECIALLY THE HOSTS PARENTS OF “THE WHITE PROM”. START WITH THE REAL PROBLEM! PROUD OF THE INTGRATED PROM IN WILCOX COUNTY- GLAD YOU HAD A GREAT TIME- THE WORLD IS LUCKY TO HAVE YOUNG PEOPLE IN IT -ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU THAT HAD THE INTEGRITY AND DIGNITY TO ATTEND- I HOPE 2014 WILL HAVE ALL STUDENTS THERE WITH A NEW SENSE AND PRIDE IN YOUR SELVES OF INTEGRATION- IT IS UP TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. WILL YOU STEP UP?

As a black student in a predominantly white university, my first girlfriend was a white girl. We met on a prom night. Neither one of us was at the prom. I met her on the prom night while returning from class. She was hanging outside the building where the prom was held. Her reason for not being at the prom was that no male student asked her to be a prom date. She said her friends thought she was not pretty enough to have a prom date. I made her realize that she was beautiful. We had a long conversation that evening. There was good chemistry between us—we just “hit it off.” Even though we could not escape the pry of other people’s eyes seeing a black student dating a white girl, we enjoyed a good relationship. Discrimination goes on within ethnic groups, just as it is between ethnic groups. There are whites who discriminate against other whites, just as blacks who discriminate against other blacks. it is human nature.

Once again, you just can’t fix stupid…. About Black History Month…. This is the only 20 days each year that students (both black, white and other) are exposed to any significant amount of history dealing with non-white persons. When the textbook writers get it right and really incorporate all of the important figures of history into the textbooks, I would be more than happy to see black history month retired.

Katy, you are making an argument that doesn’t need to be made because there are very few if any all black colleges in the U. S. There are historically black colleges; however, they do not discriminate against any student of any race who desires to attend it and meets its qualifications. And while I am at the pulpit… on minority scholarships…. of all the monies set aside for such scholarships, this only comes to 3% of the whole. With that said, of every 1 million dollars of scholarship monies, only $30,000 would be in these funds, leaving $990,000 in the pot for all non-minority students.

The bottom line is that this whole separate prom thing is wrong. Kudos to the students who took a step to end it and shame on those parents who work overtime to perpetuate such drivel.

Posted by: johnnyt | April 28, 2013, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm

correction: With that said, of every 1 million dollars of scholarship monies, only $30,000 would be in these funds, leaving $990,000 in the pot for all non-minority students. The remaining amount would be for all students, including minorities.

Posted by: Searcher | April 28, 2013, 8:18 pm 8:18 pm

Searcher, I find the people in GA to be generally great, and not just because I’m one of them. :) People can usually tell when others have disdain for them, though, and tend to not engage them if they can help it, and that may explain your experience with people in GA.

As far as these “proms” go, people should look into other school districts where there is no school-sponsored event and see how the students and residents there handle it before passing judgment on this tiny south GA town.

Posted by: csm | April 28, 2013, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm

It is unbelievable that we are still having this conversation. There is a huge difference between ‘race’ and ‘culture’. Culture is something that is celebrated by those within the culture and shared with those outside. The growth in sharing this culture, helps to create a better world for us all. One of the commonalities that we all share is food. We need it to sustain life, for physical growth and good health. As an African-American, southern born, I have had food experiences that harken back to slavery. Bearing in mind that I am not fond of them all, but I feel it is very important to know and experience, as well as share. I have had the pleasure of tasting the cultures of other people, who feel honored that I am able to step into their world and live in their experiences. This is true love for your their culture and for humanity.
When people speak of ‘Black History’ or the ‘Latin Grammy Awards’, these aren’t exclusive to people who are African-American or of Latin decent. These are events that are presented/televised to share cultural experiences. If a ‘white’ American makes the choice to not engage, they’ve made a conscious choice to not partake in the cultural experience and have ‘prejudged’ those who are within the culture. That is prejudice — a prejudgment on people who aren’t ‘like’ them.
What these Seniors have done will have positive implications for those who will follow in the years to come. They will all have the opportunity to flourish beyond Wilcox County and the limited hearts and minds of those unwilling to live in the present.

It is amazing that there is a Black History month – not a white history month (that is racist). There are all Black groups throughout our colleges and universities (not an all white group – as that is racist). So is it safe to say that the “racist’ tide has switched sides? Be a white and claim “pride” in who you are, etc and you are racist. Be a black and claim the same pride and you are seen as progressive…? WTF

Did black parents invite white kids to their parties? I live in Maryland.. our High School has a PROM and Different Parents have AFTER PROM parties.. It’s appalling this was still happening in modern day America. Scarier yet is that we have lobbyists trying to remove laws that encourage desegregation and protect civil institutions (whether it’s voter districting or school enrollment), Obviously we have parts of this nation that need those laws on the books still. The parents that encouraged segregated proms should be disgusted with themselves.

I think I would feel more comfortable in NYC(I was there for a week and loved it) or LA than in any rural hick town. Some people are scared of the melting pot that America will become and perhaps just plain scared of differences… I bet they wouldn’t even approve of same sex couples.

I am a sixty-tow year old African American that experienced downright raw segregation during my early education and high school years in South Florida during the 60s. After attending college, I enlisted in the Army and my wife and I raised two girls during my almost thirty years of active duty military service. I can honestly say that we were blessed that our children were raised in many multi-cultural environments with no segregation. In fact, I don’t recall them ever telling us about having a bad experience with other ethnicities. This is the truth–and I was stationed in the Savannah/Fort Stewart, Georgia area.
Now, here we are in the 21st century and innocent children are still being guided and taught to disassociate and practice raw racism and ignorance. This is to say that fools can only breed little fools. The little fools can only act like fools and follow the big fools. In spite of so many current day fools, I really applaud these four young women who challenged blatant corruption and ignorance. Four intelligent young women had the heart and goodwill to do the right thing. The fact that these women were successful in achieving their objective speaks volumes about their character, their hearts, and determination. They proved that God’s will and grace will ALWAYS overshadow the mindset of a bunch of low-life, stupid, worthless parents (big fools) who breed children to avoid reality and remain fools all of their lives.
I encourage these four young women to remain focused and diligent about making a difference in their lives and this world. What they did will forever change the landscape of this pitiful and sad town. Nothing will ever change what they did or the experience they shared.

Nearly 40 years? R U serious? As far as the private party (prom), that’s perfectly legal. I still love the South but a bit pissed off that some of us southeners are still having this type of mentality. It’s called the UNITED States of America for a reason.

I grew up in Georgia, attended prom 20 years ago, and never saw anything like this. I had to read and re-read this article to even believe I wasn’t reading the Onion. However, just as ignorant as the racism going on in this county is the ignorance being spouted by the users on this site criticizing the entire state of Georgia and the entire south. I used to travel as a business trainer, predominantly in the northeast, and the way I was treated in New York and Rhode Island just for being from south of Maryland was horrifying. Ignorance goes both ways, folks. We – as an entire country – have a lot to learn.

@S. Crooks “How about no more Black History Month (unless we have a white history month) no more Miss Black America (unless we have an all white one) You know it goes both ways here.”
Not to be rude, but it doesn’t go both ways. every month EXCEPT black history month is white history month, and Miss Black America is held so that black women can be represented. Racism requires a group from one race to hold some sort of privilege or good/service from another group in discrimination. Black people don’t own anything, so what are we keeping you from? the worst we can do is be mad and hold the functions that overall black people have barely been given the opportunity to take part in (past and occasionally present)

Um…most of the kids at that prom were black so it didn’t look that integrated to me. And personally, I see nothing wrong with the white parents wanting an all white prom for their kids. Races should not mix and by that I mean marrying one another, having mixed children, etc. I mean, my prom was obviously for everyone, and that was cool. But blacks have taken over everything while whites sat back and allowed it. I think it’s great that these parents are taking a stand in their own way and not backing down to pressures from everyone else. Good for them. More whites should stand up for their race. Being proud to be white does not make you racist necessarily. Blacks are proud to be black and that is ok, but if you’re white and proud, heaven forbid. Screw that.

I am a life-long resident of Georgia. I am a retired school teacher and am currently a lawyer. I have taught in several school districts and have never seen anything like the whites-only prom in Wilcox County. In my early childhood I lived in Telfair County that borders Wilcox. Now I live in a county about equal distance between Chattanooga and Atlanta in a neighborhood of multiracial and multiechnic residents and attend a church with multiracial and multiethnic members who fellowship and eat at each other’s homes. I remember the 1960′s as a teenager. I believe the TV coverage at the time helped to shame Southerners who were in denial about the inhumanity of Jim Crow South. I cannot understand why Wilcox County persists in an attitude that is no longer mainstream in Georgia or anywhere else in the U.S. I am older than the parents producing this prom, and I loath it. I don’t understand how can they follow my generation with retograde additues.Wilcox County many comprise only .0001% of the state’s population, but I feel keenly embarassed for the rest of us that even such a small group stiil exhibits such behavior.

@ Rob 6:10 “more of the standard garbage. hebrews get to stay a pure race, never criticized by the media they own, why they encourage animals and humans to interbreed. keen, huh?”

you are right imagine humans having to interbreed with an animal that looks and thinks like you.
what a deservice to mankind

I dont understand some comments here, not all whites are racist but those that are are very ignorant.
you block out people of other cultures, do your best to avoid them. then get upset when they form their own little groups ,associations and communiities.
one of the greatest symptons of inferiority complex is superiority complex, you guys feel threatened
for only God knows want reason and like a bully the ony way to feekl better about yourself

@EMILY Thats ridiculous there should be no Naacp or Black History Month or Bet because if we made a W.E.T or White History Month or Waac(aucausin)p there would be this whole big deal about racism. And also Miss america isnt Miss White America a winner is a winner regardless, so dont blame being black as why you havent won that contest or try to associate those things with anything because you know good and well you wouldnt accept nor would half of america. And I believe personally thats its BS yes I said its BS that african americans have the ability to call something black this or that. The first time I call my supermarket or club or restuarant white or tv channel/ association/ or celebratory month of rememberance white it will end for being racist or I will get some sort of bs for it. Lets be honest.

@Rich…Learn your history!!! It wasn’t your WHITE people who was forced from their lands and brought over here to this country only to be beaten and sold amongst other racist. It’s wasn’t your WHITE people who was hung & stripped but naked with their remains left hanging from a tree where everybody can see it. It wasn’t your WHITE people who fought blood, sweat, & tears to gain equality for all races. So you you say WHITE people don’t have a month to celebrate, you sound ignorant because WHITE people have had hundreds of years to dominate, dictate, & control America. Now in 2013 equality is here due to the works of renowned individuals such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, W.E.B Dubois, The NAACP, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, William Still…Need I continue!!! Don’t ever make a racist remark like that unless you have definitive evidence to back your statement up!!!!! I believe that this prom represented a call for change!!!

As a white man in Cincinnati I thought race relations here were a bit behind the times, but this is just ridiculous. Mark Twain said “When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it’s always twenty years behind the times.” I guess now he would want to be in GA. In another decade or two we will hear about them celebrating the end of the Cold War.

Onward to mongrelization.

Posted by: spence | April 29, 2013, 7:21 am 7:21 am

There’s still plenty of segregation. Just ask the congressional black caucus or BET or look in almost any school cafeteria, plenty of none mixing going on there mostly by self choice.

Posted by: Merlyn | April 29, 2013, 7:22 am 7:22 am

Like many others here, I cannot believe that in 2013 we still have idiocy like segregation in this country – anywhere! God bless these kids for taking a stand and doing it in a mature, responsible manner. From what I’ve seen, it’s looks like their prom was a HUGE success, and I hope everyone who attended had a great time. As for the “white” prom, those parents (and their offspring) need to grow up and get a life. Their behavior is beyond disgusting!

Gene and Susan! I beg your pardon. I live in the State of Georgia and am offended by your blanket statements. To categorize the entire population of a state or a region based on the actions of a few is ignorant and unfair. Doing so makes you no better than the unfortunately racist people who are among the Wilcox County residents. FYI I have lived all over the United States and, so far, I have yet to see ANY area that is immune to racism. At least the students in Wilcox County, Georgia are DOING something about correcting this problem. How about some kudoes for that? As the old song says: “You’ve got to accentuate the positive!”

Posted by: Patricia Taber | April 29, 2013, 8:15 am 8:15 am

2013 and places still insist on segregation. I am 50 years old and have always gone to non-segregated schools which held events to be attended by all that wish too. Hopefully this generation of students will continue to push for the equality across the board.

Posted by: Timme62 | April 29, 2013, 8:27 am 8:27 am

“The old generation of bigots and racists will eventually die out, leaving room for future generations”—-really? Then how do you explain this? Seems the south just keep breeding bigots .

Posted by: womens vote | April 29, 2013, 8:29 am 8:29 am

“categorize the entire population of a state or a region based on the actions of a few ” — well then, I guess you know how it feels to be muslim, eh? But actually, given that the confederate flag still flies in the south and I”m not hearing any uproar , seems the ‘few’ are more like that majority.

Posted by: womens vote | April 29, 2013, 8:31 am 8:31 am

More racist reporting.—- How can anyone be so daffed to not understand that the continued knuckledragging of southern whites is news. Yes, it is news. And when this sort of things still continues, we should drag it out in the open so we can shame whomever is part of it. Absolutely. When you allow racism to exist and turn a blind eye to it, this is why we had ‘slavery lite’ for 100 years after slavery was outlawed, pretty much slaverly continued in the south until the 1960s, with blacks unable to vote, get jobs outside of menial labor, blacks unable to hold public office, unable to get access to quality education, unable to live a free life. For ONE HUNDRED YEARS!!! And then, when the north, and liberals….again….DRAGGED them into having a trace of humanity, how do they respond? Hanging blacks, executing them, dragging through the streets, torturing them. Yup. how awful. Wanting to be free, eh? It’s beyond disgusting. it’s quite plain there is some mental impairment of southern people. YOu just do not do the right thing, ever, generation after generation after generation. You have a long history of cruelty and evil that just does not get better with time. It is what it is. Outlaw the confederate flag per YOUR own doing. Then maybe we’ll look at you in a more favorable light…that would be a nice start.

Posted by: womens vote | April 29, 2013, 8:40 am 8:40 am

Almost always, with very few exceptions….it is a black man with a white girl. Why is it very seldom the other way? Even on tv commercials…black man…white girl. Just askin…..

Posted by: longbinh69 | April 29, 2013, 8:54 am 8:54 am

“Despite this year’s groundbreaking integrated dance, once again this year there was a segregated prom attended only by white students.” — NOTHING has changed. Racism is everywhere, even up North. They’re just not as obvious about it up here.

Posted by: mobredthree | April 29, 2013, 9:02 am 9:02 am

You people crack me up, we have special month for black history only, black tv segration is alive every still. Until the labeling of white, hispanic, african american, asian, etc…is removed there will always be racism.

Posted by: jacksayso | April 29, 2013, 9:16 am 9:16 am

women’s vote—just as many bigots in the north also, they just hide it well. Your comments scream raciest towards southern people no difference….

Posted by: jacksayso | April 29, 2013, 9:19 am 9:19 am

please read the story.

“For decades, the school board has avoided officially endorsing prom festivities, instead relying on parents to host and control invitations leading to year after year of two dances — one for white students, and one for the black students.”

I do believe this would indicate the whites have only invited whites and the blacks have only invited blacks. Seems to go both ways.

This school district does not sanction the proms. They are put on by the parents and students.

Posted by: cyorke | April 29, 2013, 9:33 am 9:33 am

How pathetic. It’s 2013 and they are FINALLY having their first integrated prom?

Posted by: Tiffany | April 29, 2013, 9:33 am 9:33 am

I guess I’m naive because I was really surprised to hear there were still segregation like this.

ABC—-I wish that there was a way of printing off this page. If I could do that, I’d save it as proof for the next person that tries to tell me that bigotry and racism are a thing of the past and we should all just get over it. 150 years and it continues. Same old, same old.

Posted by: howdymo1 | April 29, 2013, 10:01 am 10:01 am

I don’t know why everyone is surprised at this article because racism is alive and kicking in every state. @Howie….you just had to be ignert (and yes I spelled it right and that ignorant to the tenth power). Maybe you need to go back to your history books because there is no such thing as a “pure race” every since master visited Besty cabin way back when there were slaves.

Posted by: Sean | April 29, 2013, 10:26 am 10:26 am

I am just sick to my stomach from reading all these pro-Race mixing comments. They remind me of the characters in the film “Idiocracy”. Test after test proves that the Negroid Race is less intelligent than the White Race. FBI crime Statistics prove that the Negroid Race is more prone to violence and crime possibly due to the MAOA-L gene.

The most important thing in the world is a White woman’s eggs and to see them fertilized by some non-White male is a true holocaust.

Props to the students. Pretty sad that this is still a concern in the 21st Century. As a reminder – we are all the HUMAN race. If we don’t learn to get along desipte our skin color, religion, ethnicity, etc, well – we’re just screwed.

Posted by: Curiouser | April 29, 2013, 11:47 am 11:47 am

Maybe in a few more years the white parents will stop believing in ARYAN SUPREMACY TOO. Amazing how nasty the human mind can be and how long it takes for people to give up their PREDJUDICES.

Posted by: Darwin was right | April 29, 2013, 11:51 am 11:51 am

if people knew their history, during slavery, the master was always visiting some poor blacks residence, hence the word, mulatto. This is the 21th century. I live in Chicago and have always gone to an integrated school. I know there are still some racist people out there and will always be, but I do applaud the ones that take a step forward. Those students stepped forward and did what they wanted to do. They held a mixed prom.

98% of DNA gene-coding sequences for Chimps and Humans are identical, but it appears that in some ways Chimps are more intelligent. For example, they don’t hold separate proms for light skinned Chimps and darker skinned Chimps. They don’t throw fellow Chimps into gas chambers over disagreements on religion. And they don’t set off bombs at Chimp marathons and kill little 8 year olds. The so-called “higher intelligence” of humans appears to be a bit overrated.

Posted by: Darwin was right | April 29, 2013, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

@DARWIN WAS RIGHT—————–Chimps don’t do those things because they aren’t smart enough to do them. Watch chimps for a while and you will find plenty that do mean spirited things to their own. You can see it among a lot of animal species.

Posted by: dave | April 29, 2013, 12:38 pm 12:38 pm

@DARWIN WAS RIGHT—————————additionally chimps live in a rigid hierarchy structure with little equality so they are not enlightened as you think.

Posted by: dave | April 29, 2013, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

No matter what parents wanted, the school, officials and administrators of the town are responsible as well, for enforcing it. Parents can’t hide behind officials in order to discriminate. They need to be publicly shamed to stop this sort of thing. Put the photos in the paper of all the people who requested or made the segregation possible, along with the new interracial prom photos, and then you have the right story. Then make them get their Mitochondrial dna done so they see our ancestors are all related.

Posted by: Sayit | April 29, 2013, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

Really both sides did it for years. Not just white people. Whyt do people also attack them. The lies the media puts out are too funny!! Both sides have done it for years it was always their choice

Posted by: Mary | April 29, 2013, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

The south is no different than anywhere else. The only difference with these people is that they were bold to do what they feel. I bet you once the “media” is gone, eveything will go back to the way it is. There is nothing wrong with having pride for who you are; but when you degrade others, that is the problem. I see nothing wrong with BET or latino shows because the MAINSTREAm will never give the same equal time to blacks, asians, latinos. That is just fact. Also, and I hate to say it, there is bigotry even within racial groups. There are blacks who hate blacks and date whites because they think whites will treat them better and we know that is not true. The same with some latinos and asians. And this happens ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES.

Posted by: Joo | April 29, 2013, 4:22 pm 4:22 pm

You people crack me up, we have special month for black history only, black tv segration is alive every still. Until the labeling of white, hispanic, african american, asian, etc…is removed there will always be racism.—– This is a fanasty as well. Do you really believe by removing a “label” that is going to make people not hate you? I got news for you, there are blacks who hate blacks even though they are the same label. There are Asians who hate Asians and Hispanic who hate hispanic. HATE is just apart of life. And if a person does not hate based on skin color, they will hate on something else. That is HUMANS for you.

Posted by: Joo | April 29, 2013, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

To clarify some things for some of you. The ‘Whites Only’ prom was for only Whites. A bi-racial student tried to attend last year and was escorted away by the police. The ‘Black Prom’ was attended by students of ALL races to include White students. Since the school refused to stand up to the status quo and sanctioning an integrated prom, as many other schools do throughout the Georgia and the rest of the Deep South, they chose the easy and I shall I saw cowards way out and left it up to the parents. This is how it’s always been. So you have 4 girls, 2 Black and 2 White who chose to leave a greater legacy for their school. And even within this comments section, you have people who would celebrate segregation as some sort of tool of supremacy. But if these kids are taught to live and work with others unlike themselves now, how will they develop success in the real world? For all of the bickering on this website, suffice it to say, that the students that did show up, had a wonderful time. They tried to make their small corner of the world better by having a Prom that celebrated the melting pot that the United States really is. Can we at least agree on that?

Posted by: Lady Valkris | April 29, 2013, 6:18 pm 6:18 pm

These parents are the same dumb ignorant folks who watch Fox n Friends and Hannity and think they’re so right and the rest of us are so wrong.

I think that a local African American celebrity/sports figure should step in and throw a ridiculous off the hook party on their private yacht/at their estate and include everyone from the school…except the kids that went to the segregated prom.

DUH …. half the student body is black!
Exactly how many white students attended?
