ABC Closes Demo Gap with NBC to 95,000 Adults 25-54 for the Week

Season-to-Date, "ABC World News" Posting Smallest Gaps with "NBC Nightly News" in 5 Years

For the week of July 15, 2013 "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 7.01 million Total Viewers and a 1.5 rating/6 share/1.82 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. "World News" was up from the previous week in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 - 6.88 million and 1.81 million, respectively, for w/o 7/8/13. In fact, "World News" stood as the only evening newscast to improve week to week in both measures as "CBS Evening News" was mixed (+3%/-1%), while "NBC Nightly News" was down (-2%/-10%). Additionally, "World News" grew in Adults 25-54 for the 2nd week in a row to post its best demo performance in 8 weeks - since w/o 5/20/13.

During the week, "World News" outdrew NBC's "Nightly News" to rank No. 1 in Adults 25-54 on Monday (+37,000 - 2.009 million vs. 1.972 million) and Tuesday (+71,000 - 1.891 million vs. 1.820 million) representing the first time in more than 3 1/2 years for "World News" to beat "Nightly News" in the key adult news demo twice during the course of a week - since w/o 9/28/09, regular telecasts.

"World News" slashed its week-to-week margins with "NBC Nightly News" in both Total Viewers (-31%, 659,000 vs. 962,000) and Adults 25-54 (-69%, 95,000 vs. 305,000). "World News" saw its closest news demo performance with the NBC program in nearly 4 months (since w/o 3/25/13) and 2nd-smallest gap, overall, this season.

For the 5th week in a row and in 8 in the last 9, "World News" cut its year-to-year Adults 25-54 gap with "NBC Nightly News" by double digits (-40%, 95,000 vs. 159,000) .

Season to date, "World News" has increased its Total Viewing audience (+3%) compared to the same point last season, drawing its most-watched season in 2 years - since the 2010-11 season. "World News" narrowed its margins by double digits with "NBC Nightly News" among both Total Viewers (-21%) and Adults 25-54 (-12%) to post its smallest margins (784,000 and 308,000, respectively) with the NBC program in 5 years - since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, "World News" beat "CBS Evening News" by 964,000 Total Viewers and by 256,000 Adults 25-54 .
