An African safari turned deadly when a former dean at the University of California San Diego was reportedly trampled by an elephant.

Dr. Thomas McAfee was killed in an accident while on safari in Tanzania on Friday, according to an internal memo sent to UC San Diego Health Sciences faculty and staff

. A spokeswoman for the school told ABCNews.com that no other details were immediately available.

According to The Citizen, a Tanzania-based news website, McAfee and two companions were in Tarangire National Park on Friday  ”viewing game on foot when they stumbled upon a herd of about 50 elephants.”

Manyara Regional Police Commander Mussa Marambo told the news outlet the group ran away from the elephants; however, McAfee fell down and was trampled.

McAfee, who worked at UCSD for more than 11 years, recently resigned and was set to assume a new role this week, as chief executive of the Keck Medicine of USC Medical Foundation.
