Car Plunges Off Ramp, Lands on Frozen Pond

VIDEO: Car Plunges Off Flyover Ramp

A Minnesota woman driving in the freezing temperatures of the cold wave that has swept the United States this week fell nearly 100 feet off an overpass Tuesday before landing on a frozen pond.

The woman, identified as Anne Spiess, 54, was driving a Ford Ranger around 7:30 Tuesday morning in the town of Little Canada when she hit a patch of black ice, according to ABC News affiliate KSTP-TV.

Her car, according to witnesses, fell nearly 100 feet and rolled multiple times before landing on the ice.

"She went over the edge and then rolled a couple of times and landed on the ice," Little Canada firefighter Tim Boss told KSTP.

Spiess survived the accident and is recovering in a hospital, according to authorities. It's unclear how severely she was injured.

Officials from the Minnesota Department of Transportation said they planned to spread more sand in the area where Spiess' accident occurred to prevent further mishaps.

KSTP morning traffic reporter Rusty Gatenby reported nearly 200 accidents during rush hour Tuesday morning in the area as temperatures approached record-breaking lows.
