The cries of a Guatemalan man caught the attention of U.S. Border Patrol officials who said they found him trapped at the bottom of a dry well in the Arizona desert.

Emergency rescue teams pulled the man out of the 40-foot well earlier this week. Border Patrol officials said he did not appear to be injured.

The man, whose name was not released, said he was forced into the well by two armed smugglers after he refused to carry drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

The man is being processed for removal from the U.S., according to a Border Patrol news release.
