"World News" is the Only Program to Grow in Adults 25-54 Year to Year; Up for Seven Weeks Straight

Season to Date, "World News" is the Only Evening Newscast to Improve in the Demo Compared to Last Year (+4%)

"World News" is Having its Most Watched Season in Five Years, Best News Demo Number in Three Years

" ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast among Adults 25-54 for the week of April 7, 2014, according to Nielsen Media Research. Winning the week for the first time this season, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" beat "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" by +12,000 Adults 25-54 (1.882 million vs. 1.870 million).

"World News" ranked No. 1 three times during the week in Adults 25-54, leading "NBC Nightly News" on Monday (+129,000 - 2.307 million vs. 2.178 million), on Tuesday (+172,000 - 1.925 million vs. 1.753 million) and on Friday (+37,000 - 1.515 million vs. 1.478 million). Further, "World News" aired the week's highest rated Adults 25-54 telecast with its Monday airing.

For the 7th week running, "World News" was also up over the year-ago week in Adults 25-54 (+1% - 1.882 million vs. 1.872 million on w/o 4/8/13). In addition, "World News" stood as the only program to grow in the news demo on the same week last year as both "CBS Evening News" (-10%) and "NBC Nightly News" (-18%) were down by double digits. Further, the ABC evening newscast has turned in year-to-year news demo increases in 11 of the last 12 weeks.

For the 2nd week in a row, "World News" narrowed its Total Viewer margins with "NBC Nightly News" both week to week (-11% - 797,000 vs. 899,000) and year to year (-5% - 797,000 vs. 837,000). "World News" saw its closest overall viewer performance with "Nightly News" in over 5 months - since w/o 10/21/13.

Season to date, "World News" is up versus the same point last season in both Total Viewers (+3%) and Adults 25-54 (+4%), delivering its most-watched season in 5 years and best news demo number in 3 years - since the 2008-09 and the 2010-11 seasons, respectively. "World News" also stands as the only evening newscast to improve its demo performance from the previous season compared to "CBS Evening News" (-5%) and "NBC Nightly News" (flat).

In addition, "World News" is narrowing its season margin with "NBC Nightly News" in Adults 25-54 by double digits (-28% - 232,000 vs. 323,000) compared to its season margin from the same point last year. In fact, cutting its Adults 25-54 gap for the 4th consecutive season, "World News" is seeing its closest news demo performance with the NBC program in 6 years - since the 2007-08 season.

"World News" has nearly doubled its Adults 25-54 lead over "CBS Evening News" versus its year-ago season lead (+98% - 359,000 vs. 181,000).

For the week, "ABC World News" led the "CBS Evening News" by 1.012 million Total Viewers and by 387,000 Adults 25-54.

Note: Due to NCAA Basketball Final on Monday (4/7/14), "Evening News" was coded as a breakout; ratings were excluded from the average. "Evening News" is based on 4 days (Tues-Fri).
