Family and friends are offering support and sympathy as a 9-year-old California boy remains in a medically induced coma following a tragic accident at his birthday party.

Supporters have set up a Facebook group for Elijah Belden, whose parents told The Press Enterprise in Riverside that he was electrified on Saturday after touching a metal patio cover support at the family's home.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics told ABC News today they responded to the scene to find Elijah unconscious but still breathing, and transported him to a nearby hospital.

Elijah's father, Tony Belden, remained hopeful during a news conference on Tuesday held in front of the hospital.

"Elijah is a fighter. He's one of those determined kids," he said, according to ABC affiliate KGTV.

ABC News could not reach Belden for comment, but a representative at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego said doctors hope to pull Elijah out of his medically induced coma later today. A family friend wrote on the Facebook page that his family will remain by his side through the process.

"They are going to want to spend these next few days just being by his side and being alone with their son to help him heal," they wrote on the page.

In the meantime, the community continues to post messages of support with the hashtag #prayforElijah7. Recent posts include well-wishes from his baseball teammates and a photo of students at his elementary school wearing pink socks to show their support.
