There are many types of NHL; some aggressive and others indolent. Some acute forms can be cured. Indolent forms can be watched carefully and treated when necessary with a large variety of treatments. I was diagnosed in 2002 with SLL, small cell lymphocitic lymphoma by the Mayo Clinic and was told, as another respondent mentioned, if I had to have cancer, this was the best type to have and I would very probably die from something else first. In 2008 I had my first chemo therapy and as of today am still OK although the condition has been renamed CLL, chronic lymphocitic leukemia. The article gives no details of what form of the disease Mr. Whitfield had but it must have been an extremely aggressive type. He was told that of all the cancers to have, he was "lucky" to have this one as it was cureable. After his 3rd treatment, a scan showed no cancer cells visible. So we asked why then do we have to continue on with treatment? Because that is standard. Needless to say, my vibrant, handsome and previously healthy husband succumbed to the treatment of the disease in Sept. of 2008 after three horrific months - in the ICU. They don't tell you that although the cancer is treatable, the treatment can kill you - he was a statistic in that he was cancer free but the treatment (overdose of chemo) is what killed him. I wished we stood our ground and refused treatment after round 3 of chemo. The survival statistics are wrong, and the article says there are four therapies, while listing only three. This is a terribly flawed article. There are many forms of NHL that are slow growing (indolent) and most people live much longer after diagnosis. "63% live only 5 years" is not an accurate statistic. Cite your sources and find more current research. Your inaccuracy could cause undue stress on people with NHL and their loved ones. You need to check your statistics more carefully.
