Denmark Introduces ‘Fat Tax’ on Foods High in Saturated Fat

ABC News’ Olivia Katrandjian reports:

Denmark has introduced what’s believed to be the world’s first fat food tax, applying a surcharge to foods with more than 2.3 percent saturated fats, in an effort to combat obesity and heart disease.

Danes hoarded food before the tax went into effect Saturday, emptying grocery store shelves. Some butter lovers may even resort to stocking up during trips abroad.

The new tax of 16 kroner ($2.90) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of saturated fat in a product will be levied on foods like butter, milk, cheese, pizza, oils and meat.

“Higher fees on sugar, fat and tobacco is an important step on the way toward a higher average life expectancy in Denmark,” health minister Jakob Axel Nielsen said when he introduced the idea in 2009, according to The Associated Press, because “saturated fats can cause cardiovascular disease and cancer.”

But some Danes are not happy about the ‘big brother’ feeling that comes with the tax.

“Denmark finds every sort of way to increase our taxes,” said Alisa Clausen, a South Jutland resident. “Why should the government decide how much fat we eat? They also want to increase the tobacco price very significantly. In theory this is good — it makes unhealthy items expensive so that we do not consume as much or any and that way the health system doesn’t use a lot of money on patients who become sick from overuse of fat and tobacco.  However, these taxes take on a big brother feeling.  We should not be punished by taxes on items the government decides we should not use.”

The Nordic country isn’t known for having a grossly overweight population — only about 10 percent of Danes are considered obese, compared to about one-third of adults (33.8 percent) and approximately 17 percent (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents age 2—19 years in the United States, according to a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

But perhaps Denmark has its obesity rate relatively under control because of its policies. In 2004, Denmark made it illegal for any food to have more than 2 percent trans fats.  In July 2010, the country increased taxes on ice cream, chocolate and sweets by 25 percent. At the same time, Denmark increased taxes on soft drinks, tobacco and alcohol products, beyond the minimum levels established by the EU.

“Denmark will not only increase general health amongst the population but will also ease the burden on the public health care system and increase its resources at a time of recession when Member States are cutting public expenditure,” Monika Kosinska, the secretary general of the European Public Health Alliance, said in 2010.

Kosinska said the tax increases should be complemented by measures to make nutritious food more affordable.

“We get the taxes, but never a reduction on anything to complement the increases, such as  on healthy foods,” said Clausen.

Um saturated fats are not the bad guys. Carbohydrates are…. Its the low fat salad dressing that will actually make you fat. Watch Fat Head, then read In health and fitness.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Health Care. It is another way for the Government to control your life and generate income. They are taxing foods like Olive Oil one of the best oils to consume. They already have VAT taxes on everything you purchase. This is one country I will boycott for options to vacation in.

Strange, since the human body prefers fats as its preferred fuel of choice. It’s grains and carbs that the body hates.

People hoard instead of fighting back. Unbelievable!!!

Posted by: Jack | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 3:30 pm

What a joke. It’s another way for government to take more of the ppls money….

Posted by: john | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 3:52 pm

I don’t really see it changing eating habits. I see it making food for poor people more expensive and those who have the wealth will continue paying higher prices.

My favorite meal at a restaurant used to be $6 and 10 years later it is now $12. I still eat it just as often regardless of the price increase. I imagine that many will pay the extra money making the consumption of fat or anything else the same.

“But perhaps Denmark has its obesity rate relatively under control because of its policies.”

This is absurdly over the top.

“In 2004, Denmark made it illegal for any food to have more than 2 percent trans fats. In July 2010… At the same time…”

So was they were over weight and now they are not, thanks to these laws, or they were healthy and health minded before hand of their own free will? You remember that dont’cha? Freedom? The capacity to decide what is right for one’s own self. Self determination? Self governance?

Dietary saturated fat satisfies the human appetite. The current government approved food pyramid with its low saturated fat requirement does not satisfy the human appetite and leads to “grazing” – a never ending search for food. A low saturated fat diet leads to obesity. A high saturated fat diet leads to a normal BMI. I choose the latter.

jThis “tax” is another abuse of power by the Nanny government Liberals love so much!

the fact that they’re hoarding food shos they do not want this tax. the ultra progressive liberals got a panel of people together and voted, the people did not vote. this is yet another tax on people. hopefully the danes will wake up and revolt… if you allow thism then what’s next?

Heck, let’s tax stupidity better! Or how about illiteracy? If you can’t speak the language or did not graduate HS you should pay 1% more in sales tax. You are not paying any income tax anyhow, so there you have it…just saying.

Next ugly people!!!

Its absurd to compare Denmark, a country only twice the size of Mass. with a population of about 5 million, 98% mostly urban white protestants to the US, a country of 313 million of whom are 64% white anglo-americans, 15% Latinos, 12% African Americans, 9% asian and other. But nice try.

Posted by: phnx | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 4:44 pm

It is all about control and getting more of our money. Many of the polititions and people who enforce these laws are fat. The difference is they are rich enough to still buy these foods from the people who won’t be able to that support them.
To keep you from realizing that fact, they play class war fare and race war fare so the people stay asleep and blame the wrong people

It is coming to the good old USA. The bigger the government the smaller the citizen. My son went from 290 to 205 by eating less crabs and witched to Pam rather than olive oil. However he did need the government to tell him what to do.

Don’t really see why milk and milk products are included, they have been a big part of the Scandanavian diet for hundreds of years, without an advesre effect. AVG 131.5L per capita consumption in Denmark.

Problem is the people voted in a nanny state now they have on which is telling them what they cannot eat and now they are pissed.

Potatoes and okra are fried in a skillet. Osta! I get hungry just thinking about eating what I damn well please. Why do you people let others do your thinking for you?

So the government restricts consumption of fats through taxation. Does that mean Danes are not going to get sick, require health care, and, sooner or later, die? Of course not. The health care system will have to pay for it eventually, for everybody. False argument. It’s really about control.
I want to control what you do, and of course I am much smarter and more empathetic than you are.

Socialized medicine means that the government has an interest in keeping costs low by preventing unhealthy behavior. The inevitable result is that government will be able to compel you via taxes or laws to eat or not eat certain foods, to exercise, etc.

For some, that’s a feature, not a bug.

Knowing at least three people who have heart disease and I having lost my Gall Bladder years ago due to high fat content diets and consuming foods which are very high in salt/sodium, I think it would be good for all people, everywhere around the world, to stop eating to please their taste buds and start eating to feed their bodies. Obesity really is a serious problem I commend Denmark for doing what it has. I wish my country and other countries would start to make whole foods a requirement for the obese and that the obese are educated as to how and what to cook, and in what proportions they are allowed for their specific body types. It is time for every person to take their health seriously because if they do not then who is going to work at the hospitals and care centers to take care of them when things go awry. If everyone is too fat to work then where are the nations going to be. Thanks to people following after their own lusts are we now faced with gluttony and every type of thing that is harmful to us, and now we have a “fat bodies” pandemic on our hands. McDonald’s restaurants know they are killing people with their food as they openly admitted it and now they have moved in on China. China ought to throw them out and return to their ways before it is too late and their people are destroyed. Come on, China!, get them out of your country!! Please look at Americans because they are fat and dying because of companies like McDonald’s, Hostess, etc.

Posted by: mimi | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 8:33 pm

This is disgusting and misguided. Saturated fat in the diet is good for us. If the nanny state is allowed to keep growing, it will end up killing us with its mandates based on bad science, bureaucrats’ pet peeves, and the interests of Big Agriculture and Big Pharmaceuticals.

Posted by: Cara C | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 8:49 pm

I know, you can’t accept that the government has any right to put taxes on foods that are harmful for your health. I get it. What is happening now is very controversial because it’s considered an over-reaching power grab on the part of the State regardless of its reasons. For years, the Food Industry (capitalized for a reason) has gotten away with manufacturing products that are proven time and again to be harmful to humans who are frequent consumers, and the average citizen has been duped into believing that “Sin Taxes” (a funny way to put it) are somehow an attempt by the government to make money and keep the poor man down.

The reality is anything but. Despite the current resistance on the part of the public to believe that the government can do ANYTHING right, these actions on their part are attempt to create a more stable, healthier life for those they govern. These taxes amount to very little for the moderate consumer but provide incentive on the part of the food abusers to rethink their habits. Particularly in the US, obesity has reached epidemic proportions, and even though the average porker might think it’s their “right” to “eat whatever they want”, the record health care costs which we all as taxpayers are forced to endure calls this concept into question. Why should those of us who have self-respect be forced to pay for those who find solace in 6 Big Macs at McDonald’s…as if their habits make them anything but more apt to consume. Obesity is a disease, and it’s intolerable. I support all actions on the part of governments to tax these items.

Posted by: corey | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 8:53 pm

The reason that’s always given when these laws are passed is that it will reduce health care expense. Is the assumption that if we eat healthy enough we’ll never die? What if eliminating heart disease just results in an increased incidence of something else like cancer that is even more difficult and expensive to treat?

Posted by: Lyndell Duvall | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 8:56 pm

In Essays on Fascism, Mussolini said the basic tenet of the Fascist philosophy is the belief the life is too complicated for mere individuals to the decisions affecting their lives. All decision making power must be in the hands of the central government bureaucracy, the only persons competent to make decisions. Seems that what we may have thought, the fascists really won what the Soviets used to call the Great War Against Fascism.

Posted by: equail | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 9:08 pm

If people live significantly longer because of healthy-eating laws, that will increase the burden on the public health system, not decrease it. Health costs associated with end of life can be expensive whether one if healthy or not. It might be cruel to say, but if one dies sooner, then the costs of checkups, vaccinations, and other medical expenses that would occur over a longer life will not be incurred. Do you believe that an unhealthy person who dies at 50 will incur more medical expenses than a healthy person who dies at 100?

Posted by: Bill | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 9:20 pm

The government should stay out of health care and quit trying to restrict the ability of citizens to freely make diet and lifestyle choices for themselves and their children, and take personal responsibility for such choices. But under a government health care system, where everyone pays for each other’s benefits, an individual’s diet and lifestyle becomes everyone’s business; and as a result, the people become less free.

Why not tax people for BEING fat, rather than eating fat. Here is why that makes more sense. If you eat a little fat, and exercise, or have an occupation where you actually utilize the fuel, it is doing you little harm. However, someone who simply pigs out is the one more likely to become a health case. So, we are tackling the problem directly.

Posted by: Daryl | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 10:33 pm

why stop there? just reform the whole system! Outlaw all food outlets, make only one national food outlet for everyone where menus of only optimal nutritional values as determined by the state will be distributed. Everyone has a tax taken directly out of the paycheck that pays for their daily food allotment and no one will have to worry about getting fat.

Wow. It’s actually troubling to know how few people understand the topic yet are willing to share their ignorance as though the rubish spouted is factual information. Men’s Health touted as a high level source of medical information? Wow. Perhaps Denmark has not done such a bad thing considering what I’ve read here.

Whoah Mimi, what else do you want your government to control? How many curling-iron and/or flat-iron degrees should the government limit you to in order to keep you from destroying your hair? How many tampons should you be able to use each month? How much lotion you can apply in a day? Have you ever considered how easy is it to regain your freedoms, and where do you draw a line on what freedoms you surrender to the government? Where does your personal responsiblity end? Is your body your own private property, or should the government control it? Lastly, have you ever read George Orwell (Animal Farm, 1984), and either way, how do you feel about being a slave?

Posted by: Mimi_wake_UP | October 2, 2011 October 2, 2011, 11:30 pm

This is a way for the government to fill its coffers.

People who are addicted to junk food will buy the junk, even if they have to pay more for it.

Sad thing, though. I buy my Christmas cookies from Denmark, and my favorite cheese, Havarti, is also from there.

One thing I will admit about Europe is that we won’t give up on breads and pasta. I’m gluten intolerant and get sick if I eat too much of it, and of course, the highest diabetes rates are in countries where grains are staple. You may be able to stay thin if you keep moving but you’ll eventually get diabetes if the main course is always grains. Animal fat is not only good for you but NECESSARY for proper health of the nervous system. Without animal fats you can develop depression and nerve damage and lose your hair. Many vegans I know ended up eating meat because they were extremely unhealthy, weak, and had very thin hair.

Denmark doesn’t understand that a tax on food with saturated fats won’t just lower incentive to buy those products, but it hurts the market by forcefully shrinking the businesses that make them. Consumers need to decide for themselves if they want a certain thing to eat, rather than have the government help choose for them.

Posted by: Alienwizard | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 1:15 am

What a clever ruse by the Danish government. Healthier citizens live longer and consequently, will be paying more taxes for a longer time, enriching the Danish treasury even more. Why didn’t Obama think of that?

Posted by: jimmyjet | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 2:10 am

What if I choose to eat whatever I like and am willing to risk not living as long? Why am I unable to be left alone to make that choice. Punitive taxes are beling levied on items that have been identified as “bad” for us. So what if they are? It’s not like everyone doesn’t know that inhaling smoke is not good for you. Or eating 4,000 calories per day. But what if we want to do those things? It usually costs more for insurance and the accuaries have figured that in to the premiums.

If the government needs more taxes then just raise them for everyone. But don’t tax people for exercising their personal freedoms.

Last time I checked (a couple of years ago) there was still no evidence that saturated fat intake leads to heart disease. It may very well turn out years down the road that this sort of action will create more health problems than it will solve. Also, if the Danish govt. is correct, and healthier people will be living longer won’t that create a greater long term burden on their health care system. After all end of life care is the most expensive type. And while were on the subject of govt. overreach, how many world leaders reversed their CFC regulations this year in light of conclusive evidence that they do not contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer? Bad govt. policy is with us forever.

Just another money grab from the citizens pockets. This has nothing to do with health… this has everything to do with the state stealing more and more money from people. Denmark also has a large smoking population.. When will people learn that the voracious appetite of the state for tax revenue is never ending… after this money is taken and spent / redistributed they will come up with a demonization of some other food to justify taxing it. Citizens are nothing more than REVENUE GENERATORS for the state… There needs to be a call to arms to stop this illegal taxation

As a Dane I feel obligated to make a comment.
We pay a lot of taxes- I could cite number but you would all have a stroke if I did.
In fact I think that if anyone in the USA proposed a tax level of even half what we pay – it would trigger the second American revolution.
BUT !!
There is a lot you pay for that we don’t .
I have a University degree which I didn’t have to pay for.
If I have a heart attack, it won’t cost me anything (financially) – not the ambulance, the surgery, the hospital bed, the recovery or anything.
If I lose my job, I will not end up on the street without money or a place to live.
School for my children are free – same for their education. They can be whatever they want to be. Only their mind set the limits.
This cost money – and they have to come from somewhere. Personally I would rather pay a little extra for my butter than have my income taxed even further.

Finally I like America – I often think you are all crazy – but I like the USA.
You live in a great country and I think that if you put aside your differences for a while – well there Is nothing you can’t do, including pulling yourself out of the current financial mess and back on top.

Good luck.

If I were the editor of this “article” I would’ve struck the line “But perhaps Denmark has its obesity rate relatively under control because of its policies.” Author intrusion, author introducing her bias into the “reporting.” Author trying to sell the reader on a specific political agenda.

Geez, these Soros-owned media bloggers think they’re getting slicker, but they’re not. What a shame for them and their political agenda–to be so educated they can’t see how stupid they are. So, ABC, was Obama worth squandering your public trust? Was he?

My eyes bleed all the time when i go out in public and its discusting and stinks. Yes i smoke so it is very fair so be careful what you wish on other fellow americans, it could come back to haunt you

Wake up people!! It will not be long before government will be choosing your boyfriend or girlfriend for you in the name of “harmony” and positive reproduction outcomes. Time to STOP IT NOW!!!

Throw these people out of office NOW and vote in those who believe is liberty and the right of free choice in living our lives as WE see fit and not as they decide we should live them.

People need to be responsible for their own actions and should suffer the consequences of them, good or bad. Moreover they should be taught from birth they will be responsible and they must not expect their neighbor to do for them what they refuse to do for themselves.

Failure to do this will result in a society of mindless, needy automatons directed by and fully dependent on the government for their very existence.

Posted by: jjv | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 7:17 am

People who are against incentivising through taxes need to understand that all taxes are incentivising, like it or not. Keeping this fact in mind, you may as well pushing things that society wants less of (fatty foods that, in the end, can result in an extra burdon on the health care system) and reward things that society wants more of (working citizens).

The money for the country’s generous welfare system needs to come from some place, and this is just one more step in the country’s current process of reforming its taxes to incentivise working (by lowing the relatively high income taxes), collecting the lost revenue from things such as unhealthy food taxes, energy taxes, low-MPG vehicle taxes etc.

Whether or not this particular tax makes sense in an overall health perspective I cannot comment on, not being a health expert. Politicians don’t always make optimal decisions. ;)

More interference in a persons life by the Government. The Government needs to mind it’s own business and stay out of an individuals choice of foods. Like has been said earlier, it’s just another way to screw people out of money and the Europeans are really good at that ———— like Carbon Taxes, etc. Next thing you know, they’ll be taxing you on how much you weigh over what the Government things is reasonable number. Then will come poop taxes, air consumption tax, taxes on special cuts of meat, etc., etc.

This is what happens to Countries (including the United States) when they can’t get their budgets in line with their spending habits. Form new taxes and screw the public. Absolutley disgusting!

This really won’t save any money. They say it will reduce healthcare costs because people will be healthier and live longer. That may or may not be true, but if it is, they are increasing their costs of caring for the elderly when people live longer. Speaking strictly from a financial perspective, which costs more? Is it cheaper to pay additional costs now or to pay them later as people age, in addition to the costs of living for the elderly that would increase as they live longer? It may actually be more expensive in the long term. Are people willing to give up more to cover those costs? This is another “solve the problem now but ignore the future consequences” question that no one wants to talk about. Quite simply, we’re digging our own graves financially. I pity the younger generations for the mess we’re leaving them.

INSTEAD OF TAXING THE FOODS IN THIS WAY, SHOULD NOT THE GOVERNMENT BE GETTING RID OF THE COMPANYS THAT PRODUCE THE CHEMICALS THAT ARE DESTOYING THE PEOPLE?
IT IS NOT THE FOOD, IT IS THE CHEMICALS AND DRUGS THAT THE “” BIG BROTHER “” IS BEING PAID TO LET INTO THE FOODS!

Posted by: HMMMMM | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 8:53 am

This is insanity at it’s finest. They tried to pass a similar tax on sugary foods and beverages in New York. At first, Gov. Patterson, Mayor Bloomberg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Joe Bruno and others (people from all political parties, not just Democrats) said it was to curn people from consuming unhealthy foods, then later ADMITTED it was more about increasing state revenue than about health. It ultimately failed to go through.

They pulled the same thing with tobacco. It didn’t stop me from smoking. I now roll my own. I get more than a carton that way for LESS THAN what I would pay for 2 packs these days. It’s a hassle but considering I’m saving nearly $75, I’ll deal with the inconvenience.

One other thing people who support this don’t seem to realize is that the more you restrict something, the more people want it. There is a solution to sky-rocketing costs. It’s really very simple. Are you ready for this? Stop raising the prices on things. I know it’ll never happen because people are greedy. I mean, what do we really need inflation for?

Simply find longitudinal data that I’m sure the Danish government already has made available and see if the obesity rate has fallen since these big brother measures were put into place in 2004. My guess is they haven’t, but thanks for making the assumption that all government regulations are good for us ABC.

This article has been linked by a large right-wing American website. Because of that, the majority of the comments are left by individuals whose views are to the extreme American right-wing side. Thus, the equating of small increase on butter taxes with totalitarianism (as though butter had been outlawed).

Also, the effective cost comparisons above that talk about total medical expenditures of somone that dies at age 50 vs. 100. Most people don’t die at age 50 in American. They have diabetes and heart disease from age 55-75 though. In most European countries, individuals live longer and healthier lives and don’t have diabetes or heart disease at even half the rates of Americans – and thus, they don’t have to treat those diseases saving quite a bit of money.

This tax probably won’t change behaviors much, but it will help to pay for the more expensive care that those which eat unhealthy foods will need in their age 55-85 years.

Well, like most of these utopian ideas governments come up with, this one, if people actually complied with its goal of reducing fat consumption and living longer, would lead to increased costs down the road for the care of those who live longer and develop various diseases of the elderly, such as Alzheimer’s and cancers.

Posted by: M T | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 9:58 am

Love how governments think that we actually will believe that they are doing this for our benefit…that they really care about our health. It’s always been about the money, and it always will be.

Posted by: Linda | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 9:59 am

If the government was REALLY concerned with people’s health, they would think up positive incentives for eating healthy things as well, such as negating taxes on fruits and vegetables in exchange for raising taxes on the “unhealthy” things (although the thought of government deciding what’s good and bad makes me cringe). But this NEVER happens because they are, in the end, only looking for money.

Posted by: Terrie | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:06 am

Well, that is what you get for allowing the government to control things. Keep it up, everyone. Soon you will not be able to do the things you should be able to.

Posted by: Herman | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:07 am

This is the result of the free healthcare they get. When you let the government pay for everything they own you. Think about that besides if we tax smokers i see nothing wrong with taxing eating addictions especially when the governement is running our healthcare all sorts of stuff is going to start being taxes to death. You wanted it you will get it

Posted by: Thinkingsmart | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:08 am

If you let the Government assume responsibility for your healthcare, then you should expect that same government to assume control over your lifestyle as it sees fit. Control of anything or any behavior becomes a “rightful” duty of government because the government assumes responsibility for the consequences of your “risky behavior”.

Posted by: Richard | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:09 am

You guys are right – it is about the money.

And it should be.

Diabetes related to preventable diabetes is one of the most costly chronic illnesses out there. No health care system on the planet can handle the stress of treating a public with a high prevalence of diabetes. It’s simply not fiscally possible.

The reality is that they don’t care about your health, but they DO care about the financial feasibility of letting the public “decide for themselves” (IE – everyone getting fat and developing diabetes and being a huge drain on the already-taxed healthcare system and the economy as a whole).

If you really think the public can handle making their own decisions you clearly haven’t seen the incidence rates of diabetes and obesity in the last 30 years. If we do nothing, obesity alone will literally collapse the US Economy. How financially “conservative” is that?

Posted by: Phange | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:14 am

This is what you get when the elected officials decide how you should live. This is a country, where the avarage young person gets falling down drunk several times a month. I am talking 13-16 year old children. I rad their press daily and was born there but escaped to the land of the free. Let us not vote into power the same kind of goverment here.

Posted by: Sven Moller | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:21 am

By the way, ignorance evidently knows no bounds. Denmark has the most fundamentally capitalist health care system in the world. The government’s role is solely as an enforcer of price competition amongst providers. Citizens of Denmark pay less than 1/5th what the average American pays for better healthcare outcomes.

But hey, don’t let “facts” get in the way of your hardheaded gulping of talking points.

What do I know? I only have a Master of Health Administration and an MD.

Posted by: Phange | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:22 am

When you turn control of health care over to the government, the government is then able to control ANYTHING and EVERYTHING about you — since itwill, in some way, affect your physical and mental health.

Freedom means freedom from government.

Posted by: John | October 3, 2011 October 3, 2011, 10:25 am

The government’s role is to provide for the common defense and to provide the “invisible stabilizing hand” to protect competitive marketplaces and to stop monopolies (read some Adam Smith once and a while). The GOP agenda most of you posters so clearly gulp down like plebians (not to say that the Democrat agenda is any better) is not pro-capitalism, it’s pro-corporatism. There IS a difference and you’ve been lied to if you think otherwise.

Health care in the United states is inherently and fundamentally not a capitalistic system. It’s an oligopoly (a monopoly of hospitals and pharmaceutical companies). There is no price competition whatsoever (ever asked how much a procedure will cost? Did they actually tell you?).

In fact, health care in the United States is perhaps the most anti-capitalistic outside of a truly state-controlled system. You’ve all been brainwashed by a system whose interests are not your own. Hospitals make their money by keeping beds filled – what incentive do they have to keep you healthy? This misalignment of incentives is the very foundation of why our system is so grossly overpriced and our outcomes are so poor.

Wake up and quit sipping the kool-aid.

Healthy food needs to be made as cheap as possible while at the same time dismantling the environment that’s been created to make bad food cheap. Without an affordable alternative option the only thing this will accomplish is gov’t taking more money from the large majority of Danes who work hard for their money. Levying a TAX to CURB OBESITY? It won’t work and here’s why: Make the tax so high that people can’t afford to buy “fat” foods. The tax money is then distributed where? Why, to the governmental FAT CATS, who now have the people’s money, and can therefore further gorge themselves to ever-fattening diets because they can afford it. NO? Then where does the money go in order to curb obesity? Is there some newly invented machine that converts tax money into a thinner population? No — it’s the same old machine. I think it was invented in Chicago, and it certainly hasn’t curbed obesity there.

I understand the Idea of raising taxes to reduce consumption but all it does is give the government more money. I understand wanting to reduce consumption of junk food high in frankenfat but whole foods like milk , butter, cheese and meat thats ridiculous , vitamin c is dangerous in high amounts too are they going to tax fruits and vegetables next.

saturated fats make up a category of different fatty acids most of which are excellent for human consumption. the law should be rewritten to exclude natural foods , meat , dairy and only include processed crap in a box.

how about a suicide tax and a lazyness tax, and a tax if you smell bad , and a tax for not brushing your teeth. oh and a not recycling tax, and a frowning tax.

If raising taxes magically stopped consumption no one would: by homes , start businesses , drink alcohol, chew gum , buy cars or travel.

bottom line more taxes will never increase health and wellbeing.

everything bad is good for you, butter your cigarettes, put salt and sugar on your extra cheese pizza and since when is it the governments business how old , fat or sick I get ? is’t that umm private…

Liberalism Defined :

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government handout.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches the channels.
Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced (unless it’s foreign religion, of course!).

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes out shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his. (ie. Obamacare)

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs, and is embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he’s in labor and then sues.

For example in BC a pack of cigarettes is around 10 – 12 dollars mostly tax , when this tax was introduced the only thing that changed was an increase in government employee paychecks which is fair? I guess because most of them hate their jobs and need that extra money so they can afford the tobacco that makes their jobs bearable.

They put pictures of disease on the pack – people still smokin – just buy a fancy cigarette case

They made the shop owners cover all the tobacco products – people still smokin

I don’t even smoke anymore but I think its ridiculous, anything that attempts to reduce or ban or make a crime a mostly benign substance is doomed to failure.

If living forever even a good goal or is enjoying fat and tobacco and sugar for 80 years good enough?

I say we need an Old people tax since old age is implicated in so many diseases. how many peoples health starts to improve after 70?or 80?

Saturated Fats are not the problem. Engineered/processed fats such as trans fats (Hydrogenated oils) are the problem. They are engineered, to last a long time, but they, along with other food products, can also be engineered to create cravings etc. I’m talking about the opiate like substances in processed cheese, and the loads and loads of glutamates that are found in virtually ALL processed foods. These are the substances that create the false sensation of hunger and sense of addiction that keeps the fatties coming back to the trough.

And what exactly will penalizing people accomplish? Hussein Obama’s first act was to punish most of his base by taxing tobacco and it has done nothing except make tobacco addicts poorer. The government needs the tax from tobacco so naturally they don’t make it illegal, and iffat in food is so bad, why not make it illegal? Answer: they just want the tax money. If you don’t like the tax, then why did you elect these people? Answer: You want the tax.

Governments pretend to be experts on everything. The plain truth is, they don’t have a clue what constitutes “healthy” food. Saturated and every other non-man-made dietary fat that occurs naturally in foods is important to good health. The worst fats are the fats that are unnaturally forced out of vegetables. And the worst diet is a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet. Don’t expect to see any improvements in their health…and, don’t be surprised to find their 10% obesity rate increasing in a very short period of time.

When Madam Ceausescu, wife of the last communist ruler of Romania, was asked about food shortages in her country she remarked that Romanians were greedy and that if they got all the food they wanted they would get fat. And I laughed because I lived in a free society that would never be able to impose its totalitarian ideology on its citizens. Hmmm. Now we see the Danes taxing people to make them healthy, just as they tax them to Save The Planet, and help the poor, and feed the hungry in Africa. Who knew taxes were such a force for healing? Soon we will all be slaves to compassion, selfishly hanging on to a few pennies that we can spend as we like. A Harvad Study, called the Hope Trial, demonstrated that low fat diets were actually bad for your health. Then a meta-analysis in Diet and Nutrition demonstrated that there is not realtionship between dietary fats and cardiovascular disease. Then you have the fact that cholesterol has nothing at all to do with cardiovascular disease as the whole issue in one of inflammation. Inflammation that is poorly defined as investigators have been looking in the wrong place and in the wrong way in making an analysis of cardiovascular disease. The reason for this is because the drug companies are paying for the work and they want information on statin drugs, not the real issue. This will be coming to the US. We can not pass up a law that would ulitmately control us in some way.

Although I’m against this generally (just another revenue raiser), if we’re going to tax anything, why not tax being fat, not the fat foods? I frankly enjoy my butter and non-diet soda, along with many other “fat” foods, but I also exercise regularly and eat these things in moderation, which is why I have 11% body fat percentage. Why should I be paying an extra tax on the foods I like? Don’t tax me because other people are too lazy to hit the gym and/or learn good eating habits.

Saturated fats do not increase the risk of obesity or heart disease, it’s excess saturated fats that do. And what’s an excess and for who? People who live in cold climates like Denmark, or engage in physically demanding activities, have higher needs for saturated fats – the most concentrated source of calories.

The government should stay out of health care and quit trying to restrict the ability of citizens to freely make diet and lifestyle choices for themselves and their children and take personal responsibility for such choices. But under a government health care system, where everyone pays for each other’s benefits, an individual’s diet and lifestyle becomes everyone’s business; and as a result, the people become less free. Is government provided health care worth the price of losing your individual right to choose?

I agree – it is the processed CARBS that create obesity.

I eat BACON, BUTTER, Yogurt with 12% m.f., and lots of raw eggs…. but I seriously avoid high carb foods.

My cholesterol numbers are excellent and I am underweight.

I am accepting Danish folks at my newly opened Bed Breakfast and Bacon in lovely Southwest Ontario!

“I am accepting Danish folks at my newly opened Bed Breakfast and Bacon in lovely Southwest Ontario!”

LOL! I bet you get swamped with Danes!

What a bunch of BS. I hate margarine and eat ONLY real butter on almost all my foods. I’m perfectly healthy, 48 years old and weigh exactly the same as I did when was 20, 170 pounds. One can eat ANYTHING one wants, but it must be moderated. Too much of anything is bad. Take aspirin for example…one or two can help you feel much better but eat 15 or 20 of them and it’ll be the last thing you ever did. It’s all about moderation and self discipline, not about the government telling us what to do. I don’t need saving from anyone on anything. Just leave me be.

While its unquestionably clear that saturated fats are very bad for your long-term health, it’s not clear that they’re responsibile for obesity. The lack of exercise is much more responsible so there should be taxes, if any, on things that make us sedentary: TV, video games that don’t requirement movement, etc.

Doing whatever it takes to help people die more quickly and at a younger age would better help the fiscal solvency of these nanny-state countries. As long as someone else’s bad habits don’t affect me… Hell, in America we give away free cheese to the po’ folks.

If they pay for your health care, they can tell you how to eat.

I’m very proud to be living in a country that takes a stand on health issues. Just look at what happens when the governments don’t do anything. As always the news medias like to exaggerate, the Danes didn’t hoard for food in the area where I live! Admitted I live in an area where we are all doing well and try to live healthy and meaningful lives. Don’t forget that the Danes are considered the most happy people in the World. I have lived 3 yrs in USA and I like the country and the people very much, but back in Denmark I enjoy a society where we take care and we make rules that everybody benefits from. We don’t have the same huge gab between the rich and the poor and we all get the same possibilities of getting an education and living decent lives. A lot of us are okay with paying the high taxes, because it is for the greater good of everybody. Frankly we find the greed and need to keep your money to yourself selfish. If you have a roof over your head, food on the table and a decent life with 5 weeks vacation a year and enough money to go to almost any place in the World – what is your problem? We can afford this and we should do this.

It’s sick that people dies because of eating fat, when u have 15 mio people starving i Somalia!! On the other hand, none of you “non” goverment belivers, would handle the problems you have with obesity??
But it seems to me that you will rather figth for your freedom to ruin your own lives, than take a responsebility.

Same laws coming to America soon. This law is being pushed by the World health Org. Denmark is the test Country to see just how obedient the masses be to this law.

The idea to create a fat tax to make people healthier, is ridiculous. Especially since there are many foods with saturated fat that are healthy for you, and necessary for proper nutrition. Olive and other vegetable oils, nuts, and fruits like avacados are great for your health and your body. People need to understand the difference between good fats and bad, and not assume all fat is bad for you. It’s not just fat that makes you fat. Sugars, non-complex carbohydrates and plenty of calorie dense processed foods have a lot to do with it, as well as the level of exercise you include in your lifestyle.

The problem with a fat tax is that it will not change the way people eat. How somebody chooses to eat and live their life is up to them, and by simply charging more for the food they eat, doesn’t mean they will suddenly decide to buy “healthier food.” They will just have a harder time buying groceries. If we want to work to make our nation healthier, the food itself is what needs to change. More information on correct healthy eating would be helpful, like, people should know that eating diet protein bars all day long is not proper nutrition and even if it makes you lose weight, overall it’s not providing your body with everything it needs to operate at its best. But ultimately, everyone is in charge of their health and their lifestyle, it shouldn’t have anything to do with a tax. Furthermore, if the government is making money off of bad-for-you foods, what will the incentive be to really promote health?

I don’t see any solid logic that supports being against this. People who oppose this, I feel, are reacting more out of fear and greed than logic.
If they look back 5-6 years down the line and see that it hasn’t really had an effect, get rid of it. But to be against something that could prevent heart attacks, and heart disease, and obesity, and quite possibly save lives, just because you don’t like this little bit of government intervention – I think it’s selfish.

Also, to people who say “it’s not saturated fats that cause obesity, it’s excess saturated fats”…
uh, that’s sort of the point. They aren’t taxing *all* saturated fats, they’re taxing food with excess saturated fats.
The purpose of this isn’t to get people to stop eating sat. fats, but to get people to consider the amount of it that’s in the foods they eat.

Posted by: Sammi | October 4, 2011 October 4, 2011, 11:11 am

If you want people to be healthy…..LOWER the prices of healthy food!!!!! DUH it is not that complicated! There are alot of people that would love to get fit but can’t afford healthy food!!!

Posted by: June | October 4, 2011 October 4, 2011, 1:12 pm

Perhaps they should tax the companies which manufacture these unhealthy foods, get rid of additives and flavourings that create a craving in the body to consume more unhealthy foods- corporations should be made to take responsibility on what they put in there products…

will this tax come to the US? you best your sweet @#% it will, some politician will figure out a way to charge us citizens.

I cant beleive what the government, even in denmark, has started to resort to these days. It’s the governments fault for spending the money they did. All of them saying its for the health of people the most reasonable explanation is that their government needs money and they are finding the least expectant way to sneak in some extra taxes. The people need to do more than hoard they need to do something like the Boston Tea Party and rebel against the law.

ALTOGETHER NOW REPUBLICANS: WE’RE FAT. WE’RE STUPID. BUT WE CAN STILL WADDLE TO WALMART TO BUY CHINESE MADE JUNK AND THEN GO TO MCDONALDS TO EAT SOME CRAP. YAY US. ANY WONDER WHY THE ASIANS ARE CLEANING ARE CLOCKS?

Just a little thing about taxation levels.
According to OECD figures Denmark does hold the world record taxation level at about 50%, but the US taxationlevel isnt that much lover at about 27%. That these taxes only pay for about 2/3′s of the budget isn’t considered in this, so you “real” level where you include the IOU’s in the social security fund plus what you postpone until later is more like 40%.
As a Dane I feel I get a considerably better deal than you do in the US – even at the 27%. Nothing wrong with being a member of an expensive club if the services correspond to the membership fees and you are free to leave.

And with a bit of luck the EU court will rule the fat tax a technical trade barrier and thus illegal.

If not I can always take the 2h drive to Germany and buy my “fat” there and enjoy the lower sales tax level as a bonus.

Whoever said that the body prefers fat as a source of energy you are dead wrong. Carbohydrates are the number one source of fuel that the body uses. Who are you people? Getting fat is from eating too many calories regardless of the source. No wonder everyone is obese, clearly health education needs to debunk these myths for you.

Posted by: Katie | October 13, 2011 October 13, 2011, 11:08 pm

I, too, used to believe (kind of still do) that the body prefers carbohydrates for quick energy. To an extent, that’s true, carbohydrates release energy faster than fats. However, I have also heard that ALL animals in the wild eat a high fat diet, even the herbivores. Herbivores may APPEAR to thrive on carbohydrates, but the truth is, true herbivores have either special ruminating chambers (present in animals such as cattle and deer) or hindgut fermenting chambers (present in animals such as rabbits), where BACTERIA convert the CELLUOSE in plants to FATTY ACIDS, and herbivores eat PLENTY of high fiber foods for this purpose. Humans, however, DO NOT have fermenting chambers where bacteria convert fiber to fatty acids, so, like the carnivores and other omnivores, we are SUPPOSED to eat animal fats for our primary energy needs. Humans, and some domesticated animals, are pretty much the only species that consume high carbohydrate diets. As for the frugivorous apes, they surely do NOT eat the same fruit we humans do. “Human” fruit, in general, has a higher sugar (non-fiber carbohydrate) content than the wild fruits apes eat, so the frugivorous apes eat a high fat diet too (via the fiber in the wild fruits).
