Excessive use of antibiotics is leading to what are termed 'superbugs.' Has anyone heard of VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus) or MRSE/A (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus epidermidis/aureus)? Microbes are constantly developing resistance to antibiotics that are used as first line agents against them because of overuse. I think a ban on antibiotics that have no indication for use in animals is justified. Also, humans who consume meat might be consuming unnecessary anti-microbial agents, thus perpetuating resistance. I think this is a good article highlighting the issues of antibiotic overuse. This is a good first step to fighting resistance. I think more and more physicians are, also, recognizing this huge issue in humans and not prescribing as many antibiotics for simple conditions, such as a cold. I wonder if these farmers have looked into alternative therapy for their animals. There are numerous veterinarians certified in various alternative therapies. Natural Standard has a great animal health database that is constantly being developed and updated. It is a great way to learn about alternative therapy for animals. With that said, a veterinarian should always be consulted before starting any CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) therapy.

Antibiotic resistance has become a serious issue in the medical world. Improper use of antibiotics and overuse of these medications are two of the main reasons for the problem. In addition, new antibiotics are not being developed at the rate they once were. I found this article interesting because I never considered the idea of antibiotics in meat being another contributing factor. I think it is extremely important that the FDA takes a stand against the unnecessary use of antibiotics in livestock. I believe this is a necessary step in reducing antibiotic resistance so it does not become an even bigger problem in healthcare.
