Kudos to Gabby Giffords. I’m sure this was a difficult decision for her to make but it was the right one for her constituents. Giffords was victim to the horrible, senseless acts of a madman, but despite that, her constituents still deserve representation in Congress.

That said, I would love to see the media and political talkers focus on getting help and services in place for the insane of this country – this shooting happened over a year ago and since then, we have not heard many cries about the need to ensure that the mentally ill get help. Jared Laughner was kicked out of college for mental instability and told to get help (he wasn’t given help). If resources were in place for the mentally ill, like they are for people with diabetes, cancer and even complusive gamblers or smokers or any other medical condition, this shooting may not have happened. But it did, and since then, we’ve done nothing to improve access to services for the nation’s mentally ill. Shame.

_______________
By law if a mentally ill person poses a danger to himself or to somebody else, that person is involuntarily committed to a mental hospital and the state usually pays for the care. There is also medicaid.

The issue here is why didn't the state of Arizona believe Laughner was a danger to anybody? Everyone around him thought he was.

I agree with the first comment. The headline is poorly worded. She is putting her constituents' needs first by resigning. The headline makes her sound selfish. I know her, she is my representative. She certainly isn't selfish; she had dedicated her life to public service up until the shooting.

Wow... such a callous headline (in my opinion.) Good for her I say! She realizes that she has a lot of work to do regarding her health and cannot represent her constituency 100%. Only the best of luck to her!!!
