As a scientist, a high school sports coach who ran intervals, hills, and long miles with track/crosscountry teenagers into my 50's, and someone who gained a lot of weight in the next decade while my legs recovered and I led a sedentary lifestyle, I think it's foolish to assume your 40's alone will make you fine in your 80's without being active in between. I'm now 62 and a year ago I woke up and saw that I better get my stuff together if I'm going to be active as the decades pass. I began bicycling 25 miles/wk lost 30 lbs, reduced my rest pulse from 85 to 68, and reduced my A1c blood sugar from a medicated-but-uncontrolled 8.4 to 6.2 so far. But I've still got a long way to go - it's hard to overcome a decade of neglect, but I'll get there. My goal this decade (in my 60's) is to climb Mt, Kilimanjaro.
