Personally, I don't think the government's done a very good job of controlling these kind of issues because it is THEIR job to maintain order and more importantly than that, the safety of the citizens. The fact is that taxes in America aren't cheap and the government could easily fix this problem by providing specific means of public transportation for senior citizens, or for anyone who isn't able to drive for that matter. If they have no loved ones who are willing to drive them around, this may be the only option – who else could improve infrastructure but the state’s government itself? And since we're talking about safety issues, isn’t it also the government's job to keep track of how cops are dealing with unsafe drivers on the road? After all, the safety rules and regulations are there for a reason and the government has to be strict in maintaining them, otherwise leading these accidents to occur more frequently. These elderly drivers don’t know any better, so really…how can you blame them? The government should do a better job of trying to keep them away from harmful situations where they could pose a larger danger to others, or they could AT LEAST provide their citizens with better alternatives.

It's not age; some are totally alert and lucid at 100, while others aren't at 20, 30 or 40. EVERYONE should have to retest EVERY 5-10 years, and EVERYONE testing should have to have a letter from their doctor clearing them from medical reasons why they shouldn't drive.

Wow.. I am 45 and have not been able to drive for 3 weeks because of surgery not related to my car accident I had 4 days before the surgery. An elderly woman stopped in the passing lane of a 4 way divided hgwy. for no reason, I could not see why the car ahead of me was slowing down and ran into the back of both of them. The woman that was stopped would claim no responsibilty.

I, at 45 have noticed a drop in my driving skills I think 5 years ago I would have swerved around that accident. Being laid up and relying on the bus I understand giving up your driving privileges is hard, but I am starting to like the bus. Just remember it is a privilege and not a right, I can see testing people over 70 every other year or every third year. It is hard for me to admit that because my parents are 72 but it is time to make sure people realize it's a privilege.

Conversely I remember driving at 16 and I was not mature enough to respect the power of a car. I think simulators should be used in driving test and have objects pop out in front of the drivers.

Really elderly drivers should be tested? Teen drivers are tested. Does that mean that they are capable of using good judgement every time they drive? I have seen more potential accidents caused by aggressive drivers than teens or elderly. I have been nearly rearended on numerous occasions because I actually stop when the light turns yellow. I have had drivers pass me in the another lane just to run the red light when I have stopped. I agree that some elderly people should not be driving but if their families take away the car keys they need to be available to them to take them out when they need to go. We can't just abandon them. And that is what happen far to often. I went through this with my own mother and when I took away the keys I made sure that I was there to take her shopping, to the doctors and just get her out of the house.

To all,
My father years ago and his mother drove longer than they should have. It was very difficult to get them to admit that they should stop driving. It is the last vestige of independence that we all have. Considering the public safety, emotional and psychological issues involved, I propose mandatory testing beginning at 65 and say every 5 years hence. That would be fair to everyone because we all would be tested regardless of who we are. Medically speaking, we all know we slow down as we age. There is also the issue of guilt if someone who is older causes serious damage that may be avoided with mandatory testing. Just my humble opinion.

Why can't they make a car simulator like pilots have flight simulators, and test driving skills for all more often?

DRIVING IS A PRIVlLEDGE NOT A RIGHT!! ANYONE AFTER THE AGE OF 70 SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO TAKE A DRIVERS TEST EVERY YEAR AND HAVE A WRITTEN LETTER FROM A PHYSICIAN. IF THEY ARE UNDER ANY MEDICATION THAT IMPARES DRIVING THEN NO LISCENSE UNTIL CLEARED BY DOCTOR!!! I TOOK CARE OF A NEIGHBOR AND HE DROVE UNTIL HE WAS 98! HE DID DONUTS IN A MCDONALDS PARKING LOT ONE DAY BY HITTING THE GAS AND NOT THE BRAKE. NOT UNTIL HE RAN INTO A TREE IN HIS FRONT YARD DID WE HAVE AN OFFICER COME AND TELL HIM THAT HE SHOULDN'T DRIVE ANY LONGER. HE HANDED OVER HIS KEYS AND WE TOOK HIM TO MCDONALDS THREE TIMES A DAY IF HE WANTED. IF SOMEONE IS THERE FOR THEM THAT IT IS A LOT EASIER.
