To answer Greg’s question: yes, physical anthropologists can determine ‘race’ (what we would call ancestry) from a mummy, although indicators of ancestry would include skeletal as well as soft tissue features. Skin color is not a good indicator in ancient remains, but hair type, nasal morphology, dental morphology, and various cranial indicators are useful.

There were plenty of “west African” racial types throughout north Africa – via natural migration and the slave trade. Not telling what happened when the last two were mummified – a mistake or possibly a body was hidden elsewhere to prevent grave robbing.

The modern artist put West African features on every image and the original portraits show East African features we see in Mid East cultures. Either the modern artist or the ancient artists had a bias.

Saw a similar exhibit at the Getty Villa in Malubu during their “Last Days of Pompeii”. Fascinating.
