Being over 400 pounds and having imminent health issues, it's good that she dropped the weight when she did, because she may not have lived long enough to take the weight off on her own. She's also being smart about it, watching what she eats and is exercising regularly. I've met people who got the surgery, and did okay for a while, but then they got lazy and stopped the diet, and started gaining back the weight. The surgery is a tool, and you must watch your diet and increase your activity for life in order to keep the weight off. If you've never suffered with obesity, be thankful. Not all of us grew up with the best framework for healthy eating, or have a killer metabolism that burns everything off quickly. I'm trying to lose weight myself. Lost about 60 pounds on my own, still have about 80 to go, and I'm doing it with diet and exercise... having severe hypothyroidism makes it a slow go, and I don't want to use surgery, I want to do this on my own, since there are risks with surgery, and I can't afford to be out of work. I want to have the surgery and my insurance won't cover because my husband's employer has it excluded. You don't know what is in a person's life that causes this weight gain. I've had fractures and many other things also and the doctor told me this would probably be my best and only option and I am not a big eater or a binge eater. It hurts so bad sometimes just to perform your everyday functions, let alone even begin to do heavy exercise. My point is some people don't have a choice on how they have to lose weight. If I had the money I would do this in a heart beat to get my life back and feel like a human being again. Kudos to this lady! It does not matter how you finally take charge of your health and if surgery is the option, then it is your choice. Everyone has to take their own journey, some things work and some don't. But if the end result makes you healthier and happy then good for you!!!! I cannot believe that their are negative comments here. You act act if she "cheated" since she chose to aid herself with the surgery. You try to be over 400 lbs and then RUN. Every oppurtunity she gets now she's swimming or running with friends. So you say she shouldn't have let herself get that big. Well, it happened and she fixed it and you are STILL complaining. Can't you just be happy that she did a great job, with the tools that worked for her? I'm sure there are quite a few things that you've done wrong in your life that you wished you'd done differently, too. Have you fixed those? I happen to know this woman and she worked HARD for this. We can add Star Jones to the list too but I never meant for the list to include ALL people (black, white, hispanic etc.) who have had gastric bypass or lap band surgery whether they have admitted it or not. At NO time did I criticize the woman for having surgery, to each his own but she shouldn't be giving advice to others on how to lose weight. Not fat and never will be as long as I'm mobile. If you find the right doctor and do your home work it can take 6 months to years. You have to go through a process and show that you have tried several times to lose the weight and have health issues. Surgery is NOT a quick fix it is a tool to help you lose and keep the weight off. Understanding how to use the tool is up to you and yes patients that do not learn the tool given to them do gain the weight back after the first year. My husband and I had the surgery last September on the same day. We attend group meetings and support each other. Our medical problems and the weight was keeping us down but after the surgery and using the tool given to us we are happy and living... Gastric by-pass is a life long commitment with more than just losing weight it is taking vitamins and getting enough protein in everyday. You can not just have the surgery and look at it as a miracle cure. This story should only be used to get people to do the research on weight loss surgeries..Sign up for a FREE seminar and learn your options before having any major life changing surgery. Know the risks and complications before and after and never give up on trying to get healthy. You are stronger than you think whether you do lose weight on your own or through weight loss surgery. Shame on the people here for their negative comments and not knowing what we go through or what has happened in our lives to make us all different individuals.. Last thing for weight loss patients is to know that you will have lose skin depending on your genes and to do your homework and research this because some plastic surgeons make you wait a year or longer to have it removed after your weight loss surgery, So yes you might end up having to get a plastic surgeon and the cost is not covered by most insurances.
