Watching the Inauguration on Laptops, in Class

ABC News On Campus reporter Marilia Brocchetto blogs:

It seems as though the world stood still to sit and watch the inauguration. It’s estimated that at least 750,000 people convened on the Mall in Washington,  D.C.

But classes at the University of Florida continued  as scheduled, so some unlucky students who were stuck in class turned to their laptops for the latest inaugural information.

“Are we watching the inauguration?” asked senior Kimberly Kuizon as soon as she walked into her ethics class.

“Everyone and their mamas brought their laptops to class for that reason” answered senior Jasmine Johnson, who was already watching it live on her computer.  She brought her laptop to class and planned on continuing to watch the inauguration.

“This election is very important because America is ready for a change, one that is different from what the past 43 presidents have shown us," she said. "I believe that Barack Obama will give and show us the change that America has been waiting for.”

By a quick headcount 10 students had brought their laptops to class and they were glued to them.

The teacher, Cara Pilson, just now stopped class and has allowed for all of us to watch.

"I am deceiving myself thinking you’re actually paying attention to me," she said.

Although the fight for bandwidth this morning might be one of epic proportions, it is hard to tell how the Internet will handle its increased traffic. If you are also watching the inauguration on the Internet right now,  you’re  like many. According to MSNBC,  66 percent of those surveyed said they would watch the inauguration  on their televisions, while 19 percent said they would follow it online.

I, along with 40 other colleagues, watched on the inauguration online. The streaming video on various sites were jammed-packed which caused lots of skipping. Luckily, one co-worker brought in her 7 inch black and white portable TV and we all were able to watch his presidential speech in full. Too bad we had to bail on 21st century technology!

wow what a waste of time, I pay taxes so teachers can teach, instead they watch TV? I want my tax money back, we have the least educated children, for a civilized country. And they watched TV, it is history every time a president is sworn in or…is it racist that we only acknowledge this because BHO is african american. seems like the latter is the case, Caucasians are not the only group to be racist, but they are the only ones the race card is played on. Affirmative action….not any more,..we have a man of color as president, the highest position in this country…so goodbye to that albatross. I never owned slaves, or suppressed anyone so I don’t owe anybody anything. I pay my taxes and that allows me to complain all I want, and believe me, I am not the only one. Unity is only acheived when all participants come together. This has not and will not happen so “we are one” is more like “we are done” good luck america
