Juggling 8 Kids

The octuplets’ mom is being described by her publicist as "the most sought after mom in the world right now"… deluged with book offers and interview requests. I think we all wondered in the past week — what might it be like to raise eight babies?  Seven of the eight babies were already breathing on their own and drinking donated breast milk. But, what about when they get home?  The diapers. The bottles.  The sleep deprivation.  Well, one person who’s in a position to know what that’s like is Kate Gosselin of "Jon and Kate Plus 8" fame.  We interviewed her for a "Nightline" story last week. Two million people tune in each week to witness her family’s reality… which happens to be TLC’s most watched TV show. Part of the show’s appeal is that you see the unvarnished truth of what it’s like to raise high order multiples (in her case, sextuplets born after IUI, or intrauterine insemination).   Her belly measured 54 inches around. Even Kate thought it was mind-boggling. She told us, "when I held them that day they were born, I kept saying, ‘How in the world were they all in there?’" Now mind you, she already had twins BEFORE the sextuplets, hence the "Plus 8" part of the show’s title. The older twin girls are now eight-years-old and the sextuplets will be five-years-old in May. The costs of raising eight kids can fairly be described as astronomical: $9K per kid per year… not including college tuition. Break out the calculator. So I asked her the $72K question, which is "what do you say to someone who would TRY to have high order multiples on purpose?" Kate prefaced her answer by saying she, of course, loves all eight of her children very much, but she was also remarkably blunt. "To aspire to have high order multiples is really crazy because you are not guaranteed health or success or sanity,’ she said.  "So I would say that that would be a little bit crazy to aspire to do that." That said, she gave words of advice for her doppelganger in Calif. She told the LA Times, "People will judge you. People will gawk at you, but keep your head up and do your absolute best for your children." Photo courtesy of TLC’s ‘Jon and Kate Plus 8′
