The Quick Fix: Juju Juggles Child Safety

User Comments

thanks so much for this Juju!!!! our little one just started walking and the baby-proofing thing is truly a nightmare with danger seemingly around every corner (did i mention you need to put some baby-proofing foam on that “corner”?)… we need to be more diligent and informed… and cross our fingers!!! thanks again.

It’s been a while since I baby proofed my home but a couple of tips (above and beyond, or should I say below and beyond, what you would normally “proof”):
- don’t wait until your child starts to walk, crawlers and creepers, especially as they transition to standing and walking, can get in as much trouble if not more.
- get down on you hands and knees, crawl on your belly EVERYWHERE in your home to see things from your baby’s perspective. Pull on tables, chairs, drawers, shelves from THEIR angle, the balance of most items is set for normal usage and the vantage point and leverage a 24 inch tall person is different and comes from a different direction than from a larger person’s position — what is stable from above may not do so well from below.
- Look for sharp screws, nails, edges UNDERNEATH tables, chairs, shelves, chests, etc. Remember that babies are reaching up to and looking up at the bottom of everything, not from the same perspective we have. Use a hand mirror and flashlight!
– For toddlers put rubber feet on coffee tables, chairs, etc. so they don’t slide out from under the child as they lift themselves to standing positions or try to walk holding on to them.
– place dishes, bowls, vases way back from the edge — further than you first think necessary.
– DON’T TURN YOUR BACK “FOR JUST A SECOND” because you don’t want to be saying “OMG, I didn’t know she could do that yet!”
…so, mine is 24 now. Does anyone know how to young adult proof a car?
You can’t prevent all things accidental, but you can do lot’s to make it as safe as possible.
