Chicago Man Pops Question Up in the Air

Alexandra Williams, 28, was seated comfortably in coach on Delta Shuttle Flight 5956 from New York to Chicago O’Hare when she received a glass of champagne.

“I thought the flight attendant was confused,” she told ABC News.

But it was no mistake. Minutes later, the same flight attendant got on the intercom, saying that someone had a special announcement. The next voice Williams heard was that of her boyfriend, Arvin Shandiz, and he was asking her to marry him as their plane soared 32,000 feet above ground, as a camera caught every moment.

The skies hold an important place in the couple’s relationship; it was there that they met in January of 2010, on a flight just like this one, from New York to Chicago.

Shandiz, 27, had been visiting his newborn nephew in Manhattan. Williams was in New York for work at her job, Oxxford Clothes. Both were tired from a long weekend and were just looking forward to getting some rest on the flight.

But fate had other plans.

After Shandiz searched in vain for a space for his bag, Williams said that she couldn’t resist “poking a little fun,” quipping on his oversized bag.

“Man that stinks that your spot got taken,” she told him. “Maybe you shouldn’t have brought such a big bag.”

Shandiz was smitten by her forwardness.

“It’s not every day that a beautiful girl stops you and has a conversation with you,” he said.

From there, the couple was inseparable. They met up in Chicago, where she now studies occupational therapy at Rush University and he is a trader at V Derivatives. And as their relationship grew stronger, Shandiz knew that he wanted the proposal to be special.

He contacted Delta Air Lines, asking for their help. In an email sent to Leslie Parker, spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines he wrote:

“…My girlfriend, Alexandra Williams (Alex), and I met on a Delta flight from New York LaGuardia to Chicago in January 2010.  I can easily say that that was the best flight of my life, and as we quickly approach our 2 year anniversary, I am going to propose to her. In thinking of a creative and memorable way of doing so, I thought it would be pretty cool to propose while mid air on a Delta flight.

Parker worked with him to loop the crew in on the plan and also agreed to tape the proposal.

On Friday, Williams and Shandiz were back on a flight to New York to visit his brother’s newest baby, or at least that’s what Shandiz told his girlfriend.

About an hour and a half into the flight, he told Williams that he had to use the bathroom, leaving her unsuspecting of what was to come.

She then heard his voice echo over the intercom.

“From the moment I met her that night, I knew I would never want to spend a second without you…so help me ask a very important question, I would like you to know Alex that you’re the most beautiful girl in the world…I can’t live without you…would you marry me?”

She turned bright red and struggled with the champagne cart blocking her aisle for a few moments but eventually said the one word he was waiting to hear: yes.

“I knew that I was lucky to have him but that solidified that I’m the luckiest person in the world,” she laughed.

Delta gave all the passengers champagne and even surprised the couple with a free honeymoon package- two round trip flight tickets and five nights at any Delta vacations property.

“They are a fantastic couple and we are thrilled to be a part of that flight in their lives,” Parker said.

The affection between the two is apparent. While on the phone with ABC News, they giggled like schoolchildren, each consistently praising the other and repeating how lucky they both are.

“It’s [their love] contagious. People see our love and respect for each other and want to catch what we have,” Shandiz said.

And of the proposal, Williams said that the magnitude of the surprise is indicative of the person Shandiz is.

“It speaks volumes of who he is that he can coordinate something so meaningful,” she mused.

For Williams, the set up may have been a surprise, but Shandiz said that proposing to her was always in his plans.

“It was love at first sight,” he said. “I knew from the very beginning that that she was who I would spend my life with.”
