Help me out here people. What I don't understand is why the person reporting this segment did not question the airline or authorities about why this pilot was being indicted instead of getting the help he needs. I do not think charging him with a federal crime is the answer. This pilot has probably dedicated many years to his job, a job in which he is extremely underpaid and who has a serious responsibility for the lives of hundreds of passengers a day in his hands. True, many people have stressful jobs and they don't have breakdowns but not everybody's jobs hold the lives of hundreds of people a day. Every time a pilot takes off, is in the air and lands a plane numerous times a day he is responsible for EVERYONE on board AND they do this for crap pay so people can get to where they need to go.

While I thought this hr. of 20/20 was informative, some of the reporting failed to address questions that I felt needed to be asked. The segment where the passengers were laughing at the woman who went off probably didn't realize that it only helped escalate her emotions. Yet, the reporter failed to look at what is causing these outbreaks among passengers. Many people are afraid to fly and their anxiety levels are probably at an all time high when they first step foot on the plane. The airlines have cut flight attendance so the ability for them to help passengers in need is not easy to balance when there may only be two of them on a flight with 80 passengers.

Anyway, I just don't understand why these flight crews. who are hero's in my mind (every time I land safely), are being condemned instead of helped for doing a thankless job. Personally, I don't think it is just people in planes that are losing it these days, just watch the nightly news, all types of people seem to be losing it and losing sight of our humanity in this post 9/11 world we live in. I think some of the questions that needed to be asked were what can we do to make the needed changes to ensure safe and comfortable flights for passengers and flight crew? I don't think putting them in jail and ruining their lives because their state of mind and emotions or got away from them is a good enough solution. What say ye?

Question, did they indite the flight attendant for her melt down? Neither one should be facing criminal charges. I worked at an international airport for five years. I will have to say that the two careers that are really full of stress are in the fields of air traffic control and flight crews.

The pilot was charged with a crime "interfering with a flight crew when he began fighting the flight crew. A mental breakdown would be a mitigating factor for a judge and jury to decide on just like self defense for shooting someone attacking you. Maybe 99.9% wouldn't have a breakdown but it's that other .1% you need to worry about. this pilot had a very public dandero9us breakdown but there may have been others that didn't get media attention.

Geeeezzzz, glad he didn't have a stroke. They would have sent him straight to the Electric Chair. Our government at it's best!!

I guess I just don't fully understand why what he did was a crime. He had a breakdown, a medical situation completely beyond his own control. @Tim C......I agree 100%.

and he's being indicted for? . . . having a breakdown? Hmmmmmmmmmm, would he be indicted if he went into a diabetic coma while piloting? Gotta love the mental illness stigma, it's still in full gear.

This is a health issue not an act of terrorism. While the results could have been the same I can't help but feel the Feds are way off base on this one.

How can this fella be indicted because he had a 'meltdown?' I can certainly see suspension and a required stay in a hospital for mental health issues. Very sad. He didn't plan it~!
