What's the secret to maintaining a happy marriage?
For E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic, the secret is putting her husband ahead of her child.
In a Feb. 26 interview with Us Weekly magazine, Rancic, 38, explained the dynamic in her family.
"We're husband and wife, but we're also best friends, and it's funny because a lot of people, when they have kids, they put the baby first, and the marriage second," Rancic, who also appears on the E! network show "Fashion Police," told Us Weekly. "That works for some people. For us, I find, we put our marriage first and our child second, because the best thing we can do for him is have a strong marriage."
She is married to 41-year-old Bill Rancic, an entrepreneur who won the first season of "The Apprentice."
The couple had a son, Duke, last year via a surrogate.
The comments from Rancic, who underwent a double mastectomy in 2011 to treat breast cancer, have sparked a debate among moms, some who say she is right and some who say the TV host is wrong.
"If you asked me what the breakdown was I would say my children, my girlfriends, then my husband," said Barbara Machen, co-host of the "Jen and Barb: Mom Life" talk show. "But…don't tell him that because he doesn't know it."
"Babies take precedent over everything," her co-host, Jennifer Pate, agreed.
Radio host and relationship expert Mel Robins, on the other hand, agrees with Rancic.
"If you want a one-way ticket to divorce, just put your kids ahead of your spouse," she said. "If you end up focusing your attention on kids first, they will consume your world. You will start to resent each other."
