The Legoland Hotel opened in Carlsbad, Calif., Friday. Just outside the front gate of Legoland in California, it’s the first hotel of its kind in North America.

The 250 guest rooms are themed, so families can choose  from one of three lines – Pirate, Kingdom or Adventure. Rooms include two separate sleeping areas, with a queen-size bed for grown-ups and a separate area for up to three kids.

Kids’ areas have a bunk bed, pull-out trundle bed and a TV. In the hotel, there’s a heated swimming pool, Lego-themed buffet restaurant and themed elevators. There’s also nightly kids’ entertainment.

Insider tips: Unfortunately, there’s a daily Resort Fee of $20 plus applicable tax, which isn’t reflected in the nightly rate. Request a room on the second or third floor  facing west, as some of those have ocean views. Legoland Hotel guests get entry to select Legoland  rides and attractions before the park officially opens. Rates the first weekend in May start at $339 per night.

I think the idea is a great one! However, I live in Iowa. So it is much cheaper for me to drive to Chicago and see the LEGOLAND in CHI town and stay at a higher end/modern hotel. I did my research, and could stay at a wonderful hotel with plush linens, in-door pool, with 4 tickets to the Chicago LEGOLAND included, and then I added in cost for food for the weekend and additional things to do like Navy Pier and figured that we as a family of 4 could do that for about $500. Much cheaper than some themed hotel for $350 a night.

As far as building material goes is it cheaper to build with cement blocks or leggo’s? I’m guessing cement blocks.
