Manning the Phones: Butterball Adds First Male Turkey Hot Line Helpers

In an age in which women are called on to lean in and close the gender gap, it's men who can claim a victory this Thanksgiving. For the first time since its opening in 1981, men will be on call at the Butterball turkey talk line. After launching a nationwide search for guys to join the ranks of the more than 50 women helping out this year, Butterball chose R.J. Jaramillo, 49, from San Diego, as the first official spokesman for the hot line.

"The Thanksgiving table has changed, and men are part of the Thanksgiving process," Jaramillo said. "I'm proud to represent Butterball in this whole celebration."

2013 is the first year Butterball will have men answering the turkey talk line.

Jaramillo, founder of the blog Cook Like a Dad, was chosen for his wide-ranging kitchen experience.

"Cooking is a huge passion of mine, so I'm looking forward to sharing my expertise," Jaramillo said. "I'm most looking forward to helping everyone at the Thanksgiving table have the best Thanksgiving."

It's estimated that Jaramillo, along with two Chicago-area men and the regular roster of women, will help more than 1 million Americans out of sticky Thanksgiving situations this year.
