The tip-off came from discerning drinkers who realized the expensive Brunello di Montalcino they were sipping was not the real deal, according to Italian authorities today.

Italian police today said they seized 30,000 bottles of counterfeit Brunello, Chianti Classico and Sagrantino di Montefalco — all cheap wine with a fancy, fake label — from central Italy in a raid after a three-month investigation.

The bottles had been sold in bars, wine stores and supermarkets for about $40 each. Italian police said the fraud could total hundreds of thousands of dollars.

According to a French newspaper, a staggering 20 percent of wine on the worldwide market might be fake.

And with the US beating out France in wine consumption for the first time in 2013 — drinking 329 million cases a year — authorities said some of the fake wine could be headed into international markets, including America.

Susan Brink O’Flaherty, owner of Venokado in California, said preventing fake wine from reaching consumers started with governments and their differing laws on labeling.

“I believe that there probably are wines out there that are not what they say they are,” Brink O’Flaherty said. “One way to get what the label says you’re getting is to buy from a small producer.”

The person or persons behind the bottles confiscated today were not identified.

If you’ve ever wanted to call yourself a Guinness World Record breaker, here’s your chance. British chef Jamie Oliver will attempt to break the record Friday for “most participants in a cookery lesson in 24 hours (multiple venues)” as part of his annual Food Revolution Day, which focuses on teaching people to cook.

Oliver will host a live lesson on YouTube this year, showing participants how to make a rainbow salad wrap in real time. The event is part of Oliver’s larger effort to combat obesity in children.

“Everyone knows that over the last few years I’ve been passionate about getting kids and young people to be taught to cook, whether in schools or at home,” Oliver said in a statement. “I believe that we all now have a duty to teach children to understand what food does to their bodies if we’re going to make any progress in tackling obesity and diet-related disease, that means governments, businesses, everyone.”

Oliver, 38, has tapped schools around the world to get as many children involved in the global event as possible.

“Now is the time to focus the energies of everyone involved in Food Revolution Day on teaching kids and keeping cooking skills alive at a time when we need them more than ever,” he said.

The record is 2,102 people, which Oliver’s team is confident he can beat.

Cops Pull People Over for Serious Dessert Violations Thu, 08 May 2014 20:44:18 +0000 Stefanie Tuder

Is there a problem, officer? Yes, these people needed ice cream.

The sheriff’s office in Quincy, Calif., has been making headlines recently for a video of officers pulling over motorists, who all respond with confusion and apprehension about why they were stopped. The police then ask them to stay put while they go back to their car, presumably for a ticket … or worse.

But what happens next is what’s turning this video viral. The cops return to the cars with, of all things, ice cream, which puts a smile on just about everybody’s face.

“I grew up in this town and I’ve worked for the sheriff’s department for about 26 years, so just about everybody here knows me, and they initially were a bit surprised that the sheriff was pulling them over,” Quincy Sheriff Greg Hagwood said. “Then when we handed them the ice cream they were overwhelmingly relieved and recognized the humor in it. And we got a lot of good laughs.”

One woman in the community of 5,000 was even brought to tears by her relief.

The video was produced by the advertising agency for Wall’s Ice Cream, which is an international dessert brand similar to Good Humor. After Quincy was voted one of America’s coolest towns by, Hagwood said he was approached for a part in the video.

“It sounded like a wonderful opportunity to promote my community,” he said. “I think it provides a little bit of comic relief to what is typically the seriousness associated with law enforcement. I think it was a lot of fun to do.”

Starbucks Secret Menu Revealed Tue, 06 May 2014 17:21:06 +0000 Stefanie Tuder

Consider yourself a big Starbucks fan? Well, do you know about the coffee chain’s secret menu?

The java shop and other fast food chains are riding a secret menu wave and doing big business off items that most people don’t even know about.

The trend is sparked by a move to entice younger customers by only announcing these special items on social media or by word of mouth.

Chains don’t promote these items in-store or on their websites, so you have to walk in already knowing what to ask for. Websites like @LifeHacks on Twitter, Starbucks Secret Menu and more clue you in on the elite offerings, but finding them also takes some digging.

Some secret Starbucks drinks include the Twix Frappuccino, Raspberry Cheesecake Mocha Frappuccino, Thin Mint Frappuccino, Cotton Candy Frappuccino and Cake Batter Frappuccino.

Coffee Mug Stains Turned Into Amazing Portrait Fri, 02 May 2014 19:27:35 +0000 Stefanie Tuder

Most of us see coffee mug rings as unsightly, bothersome stains. But one Malaysian artist saw potential and turned the brown blemishes into art.

“This project was inspired by the opening and closing lines in [Taiwanese celebrity] Jay Chou’s song ‘Secret,’” artist Red Hongyi said on her blog.

“The opening line is about lifting a coffee cup off the saucer. The ending line of the song is about autumn leaves and fragmented pieces. Hundreds of individual coffee stain rings, many of them broken and imperfect like fallen autumn leaves, form a whole portrait,” she said.

The project took Hongyi 12 hours to finish because of various challenges.

“Coffee is quite a challenging medium to use — too little water and the rings wouldn’t form easily, too much water and the rings would blend into each other, resulting in just a deformed pool of coffee,” Hongyi explained. “I had to also wait for the lighter parts to dry up before stamping on the darker rings, or else the rings would not be visible.”

The end result is a realistic portrait of Chou. Watch the video above for more detail on how Hongyi worked.

Doughnut Shop Displays Sense of Humor on Receipts Thu, 01 May 2014 19:09:16 +0000 Stefanie Tuder HT doughnut receipt jef 140501 16x9 608 Doughnut Shop Displays Sense of Humor on Receipts

Jon Becker changed the text at the bottom of receipts at the doughnut shop he works at in Chicago.

Let’s be honest: most people don’t scrupulously read their receipts. A doughnut shop in Chicago is making it worth it to look twice.

Jon Becker, a shift supervisor at Stan’s Donuts & Coffee, was sitting in the office one day going through receipts, when he decided they were boring.

“It just said thank you,” Becker said. “I thought, ‘Let’s put something there,’ and I remembered that quote. It was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s perfect. That’s probably the most hilarious thing you could put on a receipt for a doughnut shop.’”

Becker chose a quote from comedian Mitch Hedberg, which reads, “I bought a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut. I don’t need a receipt for the doughnut. I’ll just give you money and you give me the doughnut. End of transaction. We don’t need to bring ink and paper into this. I can’t imagine a scenario in which I would need to prove that I bought a doughnut.”

HT jon becker jef 140501 16x9 608 Doughnut Shop Displays Sense of Humor on Receipts

After posting the text, Becker said not many customers really noticed it.

“A couple of people looked at it and were like, ‘Ah, that’s awesome,’” he said. “But a majority of people don’t seem to read receipts very closely.”

Until Becker posted a photo of the receipt to Reddit, that is, where it proceeded to go viral.

“It’s really hilarious to me that something I did just to see what I could get away with is being picked up nationally,” Becker said.

Inside the Making of Oprah’s Starbucks Tea Line, Her ‘Aha’ Moment Wed, 30 Apr 2014 19:16:33 +0000 Stefanie Tuder

You can officially thank holy matrimony for the new Oprah chai latte at Starbucks nationwide. Oprah Winfrey happened to be seated near Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz at a mutual friend’s wedding, and the two got to talking about tea.

Winfrey professed her love for chai, but admitted she wasn’t drinking the Teavana brand, which is owned by Starbucks. Schultz knew he had to change that and followed up after by sending Winfrey a sample of the Teavana Maharaja Chai Oolong. Winfrey declared the brand’s chai blend among her most favorite things in December 2013 and decided she wanted to make her own.

Thus the Oprah Chai Latte was born, making Winfrey America’s newest tea saleswoman. Winfrey teamed up with Starbucks to hawk her new proprietary chai blend at Starbucks and Teavana stores around the country this week, and it’s attracted some attention.

As seen in the video here, Winfrey worked closely with Teavana teaologists Naoko Tsunoda and Jason Adams to create the exact 10-ingredient blend that includes black tea (from India), rooibos (from South Africa), cinnamon, carob, ginger, black pepper, chicory root, cloves, cardamom and “natural flavor,” which the company declined to disclose for competitive reasons.

“Oprah was very hands on in creating her tea,” said Naoko Tsunoda, Teavana’s tea authority and director of tea development, in a statement. “We laid out all the ingredients and Ms. Winfrey personally smelled, tasted and asked about each one.”

According to Tsunoda, the team chose Indian black tea after Winfrey fell in love with chai tea at an Indian home and South African rooibos for Winfrey’s close ties to the country that’s home to the school she sponsors.

“When she said it was perfect there were smiles all around and everyone was so happy,” recalled Tsunoda. “We had an ‘aha’ moment. It was magic. We all rejoiced.”

Winfrey visited a New York City Teavana store yesterday for the launch of the drink, spawning the hilarious #OprahSelfie hashtag on Twitter, with Starbucks employees making the most of the Oprah-branded merchandise hitting shelves.
