A publisher of dog travel guides has announced its 2013 list of the Top 200 Dog-Friendly Places in the United States.  The list is broken down by state and includes at least one dog-friendly destination, activity or attraction in each.

California has more dog-friendly destinations than any other state, with more than 21 destinations on its list,  according to the list published by DogFriendly.com.

While many of the destinations on the list seemed obvious choices for dog lovers, like dog parks and dog beaches, there were a few surprises.  Did you know Fido is welcome at New York City’s Time Warner Center? On a haunted history tour of New Orleans? At the Flinstones Theme Park in South Dakota?

The publisher also included 18 hotels and inns on its list, some of which were chosen not just for allowing dogs, but for “amenities like doggy room service, dog activities, pet sitting and welcome baskets for dogs.”

Hotels, Inns and Resorts on DogFriendly.com’s Top 200 List:

Westward Look Resort: Tucson, Ariz.

Cypress Inn:   Carmel, Calif.

Stanford Inn by the Sea and Spa: Mendocino, Calif.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort: Coronado, Calif.

Dog Bark Park Inn: Cottonwood, Idaho

Or would you eat at Subway?

Certify, a cloud-based expense reporting provider, released a list of the most frequently expensed restaurants in the nation. The report is based on millions of transactions between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2013.

Starbucks. No doubt our nation's caffeine addiction is catapulting Starbucks to the top pf the list.

Picture it: You’re waiting at the gate for your (potentially delayed, thanks to FAA furloughs) flight to board. You spot a fellow traveler you’d love to share an arm rest with across the way. You make eye contact.

You think about approaching him or her. You’re about to muster up the nerve to approach when suddenly! The gate attendant calls for an immediate boarding of all rows, all seats.

You hope travel hottie is in the seat next to you. Oh please, oh please, you think. But no luck. Travel hottie is seated in 7A. Travel hottie’s seatmate? A 10-year-old with no apparent interests outside his iPad. You walk by to your seat – 13F – and kick yourself for letting the moment that could have changed your life forever pass you by.

But wait! You’re on Virgin America. There’s hope. Because Richard Branson, the airline’s flamboyant founder, claims he has the answer for “getting lucky” at 35,000 feet: Have a drink delivered to the object of your affection’s seat.

No need for an awkward interaction trying to enlist the help of  a flight attendant, either. Just use your seat back’s in-flight entertainment system.

Simply order a drink, meal or snack on the airline’s entertainment system, Red. Select his or her seat number for seat-to-seat delivery. Follow up, Branson suggests, with a “suggestive” comment  using Red’s existing seat-to-seat chat feature.

Chances for “getting lucky?” Branson says that while he’s not a betting man, “your chances of deplaning with a plus-one are at least 50 percent.”

Air Travelers Face Continued Delays http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/air-travelers-face-continued-delays/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/air-travelers-face-continued-delays/#comments Tue, 23 Apr 2013 22:58:57 +0000 Daniel Clark http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/?p=101086 ap flight delays ll 130423 wblog Air Travelers Face Continued Delays

Image credit: Edmund D. Fountain/The Tampa Bay Times/AP Photo

Air travelers started their week with a groan over delays caused by employee furloughs and bad weather.

On Monday, more than 1,200 delays were attributable to staffing reductions, and another 1,400 to weather and other factors, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The furloughs – triggered  by sequestration cuts – went into effect Sunday, affecting  all 47,000 FAA employees, including 15,000 controllers,  who will lose one day of work every other week.

Controllers have responded to the staffing shortfall by spacing planes farther apart and halting all training and modernization projects.  The overtime that will have to be paid to controllers at some of the country’s busiest airports may eliminate any sequestration savings,  according to the National Air Traffic Controller Association.

“We’re on the side of travelers,” Doug Church, spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controller Association, told ABC News. “You cannot move the same amount of planes, with fewer people, with the same efficiency without risks, and we’re not going to risk safety.”

The  FAA indicated that delays of more than three  hours were expected at the busiest U.S. airports as summer travel approaches.

RELATED:  6 Strategies for Coping With FAA Furlough Delays

Other variables,  such as sick days for the remaining controllers and inclement weather, will also make for delays.

There’s going to be no way to identify what are and are not furlough related,” Church said. “You don’t have as many people that are working when other things happen  as efficiently as they can.”

Airlines for America, an industry group, along with the Air Line Pilots Association and the Regional Airline Association, has taken legal action  in U.S. Appellate Court for the District of Columbia Circuit,  in an effort to halt the furloughing of air traffic controllers.  The court denied the motion for a  stay last Friday, citing that the petitioners  had not satisfied the requirements for a stay pending court review.

The A4A is seeking legislation that would deem air traffic controllers essential, and therefore not subject to furlough, according to a statement on its website.

As it stands, the roughly 2 million airline passengers who  fly in the U.S. every day should check flight delay information before heading to the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration said it will hold off on changing its list of prohibited items on airplanes.

The agency had said last month that small pocket knives, as well as sporting goods like golf clubs, ski poles and sticks used for hockey, lacrosse and billiards, would be allowed on planes for the first time in more than a decade.

READ: TSA to Allow Pocket Knives on Planes

The changes were to go into effect Thursday.

The decision to allow knives with blades less than 2.3 inches was met with opposition from airlines and flight attendants. Despite the opposition, the TSA held strong to its plan until this week.

READ: TSA Head: No Plans to Rescind Agency’s New Knives on Planes Policy

The Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions, which represents 90,000 flight attendants,  said Monday it remained committed to never allowing knives on planes again, adding that the ban on knives was put into effect for good reason.

“Knives were the terrorists’ weapons of choice in bringing down four jetliners and murdering thousands of Americans,” the coalition said. “All knives should be banned from planes permanently.”

The TSA Monday said the delay would allow more time for input from stakeholders.

“In order to accommodate further input from the Aviation Security Advisory Committee (ASAC), which includes representatives from the aviation community, passenger advocates, law enforcement experts, and other stakeholders, TSA will temporarily delay implementation of changes to the Prohibited Items List,” the TSA said in a statement.  ”This timing will enable TSA to incorporate the ASAC’s feedback about the changes to the Prohibited Items List and continue workforce training.”

ABC News’ Matt Hosford contributed to this report.

‘The Bomb’ Sandwich Lands Flier in TSA Trouble http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/the-bomb-sandwich-lands-flier-in-tsa-trouble/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/the-bomb-sandwich-lands-flier-in-tsa-trouble/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2013 17:57:37 +0000 Daniel Bean http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/?p=100981 Everyone knows that carrying a bomb through an airport is no laughing matter. But even casually referring to lunch as “The Bomb” was apparently a problem for an unsuspecting flier who wanted to take his fortuitously named sandwich aboard a flight  at JFK International Airport.

“The Bomb” is actually the name of a popular and, apparently, delicious sandwich from an Astoria, N.Y., deli, according to New York website Gothamist.com.

Whether his was the exact sandwich, Jason Michael Cruz, 29, was simply hoping to carry his lunch, which he reportedly called “The Bomb,” with him on his flight last week to Los Angeles, the website reported.

The TSA detained Cruz and a friend after one agent overheard the two speaking of plans to bring “The Bomb” aboard their plane. The misunderstanding caused the two to miss their flight, according to Gothamist.com.

The agency has not responded to a request for comment.

This latest TSA incident can be added to the recent list of not-so-great press for the agency.

RELATED: TSA Apologizes for Traumatizing Disabled Toddler

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California last month penned a letter to the TSA, giving the account of a security screening in which “numerous TSA officers [were] sitting and unwilling to assist” a paraplegic Marine.

Hunter said the unnamed Marine was “humiliated” when agents at the Arizona airport asked him to stand up out of his wheelchair, exposing his prosthetic legs.

Hunter also wrote that “an officer then made [the Marine] remove his [prosthetic] legs,” a claim that has been disputed by a TSA representative.

The TSA’s recent amendment to allow pocket knives aboard planes has also puzzled many. The new policy will begin April 25, and will allow passengers on U.S. flights to carry small pocket knives containing blades less than about 2.3 inches long.

The new regulations will also permit passengers up to two golf clubs, ski poles, and sporting sticks used for hockey, lacrosse and billiards.

Cuddling Up at Tokyo’s Exotic Animal Cafes http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/cuddling-up-at-tokyos-exotic-animal-cafes/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/cuddling-up-at-tokyos-exotic-animal-cafes/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2013 11:35:41 +0000 Akiko Fujita http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/?p=100935

With hawks and owls staring down customers, the Falconer Cafe in Tokyo is a stark contrast to the cuddly animal cafes the city has become known for.

Tucked away in the Mitaka neighborhood, the cramped restaurant regularly attracts curious customers eager for a unique view with their meals and desserts. From a tiny barn owl to “Jade” the Harris Hawk, there’s no shortage of feathers ruffled here.

True to its name, the cafe is run by master Falconer Kaoru Sasaki, who has dabbled in hawking for more than 40 years. He says falconry has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. Shogun and military dictators actually hunted with falcons in this neighborhood.

Today the birds are the newest spectacle in a crowded animal cafe market, long dominated by cats and bunnies  but increasingly turning fierce and exotic.

At Cafe Little Zoo in Chiba, green curry and fried chicken are served alongside an African milky eagle owl and Yucatan spiny-tailed iguana, while the Bird Cafe in Tokyo features parakeets and parrots.

Across town in Yokohama, the Brazilian rainbow boa, land turtles  and lizards are the preferred creatures. The Reptile Cafe, which also houses a collection of magazines on the exotic species, draws a steady string of customers, especially young women, on weekends.  Mami Sakurai visits alone, for a cup of tea and for a chance to snap photos with geckos.

“Cats are nothing unique, but reptiles we can only see at the zoo,” she said.

Japan’s lax animal regulations have allowed those like Sakurai  to get up close and personal with the reptiles, but Tokyo has begun to crack down on public displays of the creatures. An animal protection law was revised last year, to slap curfews on cat cafes that operate around the clock.

The new restriction hasn’t deterred customers. The opportunity to interact with the animals is irresistible, especially since cramped Japanese apartments don’t allow room for pets.

At the Falconer Cafe lines regularly form outside on weekends. On Saturdays, women crowd around the store window, with their smartphones in hand,  eager to snap a picture of the rare breeds.

Customers can purchase the birds at the restaurant,  but Sasaki isn’t exactly hoping people flock to buy.

“These animals live a very long life and require a lot of commitment,” he says.

More reason for people to enjoy them in the cafe.

The Boston marathon bombings that killed three and injured more than 170 others  have put a great American city in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.  For those who love Boston and those that have never been, here are nine amazing things about Beantown.

1. Fenway Park. You might love the Sawx or love to hate ‘em, but either way, Fenway Park is a national treasure, not to mention one of the nation’s 10 best ballparks

2. Clam chowder. Whether you call it Boston clam chowder or New England clam chowder, it’s delicious. And sorry NYC, there’s no competition here, Manhattan clam chowder doesn’t even come close.

5. Modern Pastry. No trip to the North End would be  complete without an Italian meal and an after-dinner delight from Modern Pastry. Do yourself a favor and try the ricotta pie.

6. Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings.  Even if you’ve never read the children’s book Make Way for Ducklings, the bronze statues that inspired the tale and live in Boston’s Public Garden are a photo opp not to be missed.

7. Acorn Street. If Beacon Hill oozes charm, then its cutest street just gushes it.

8. Haymarket. It’s a little dirty, sometimes smelly, but this open-air fruit-and-vegetable market is all Boston.

9. The Freedom Trail. The 16 historical sites  along the 2.5 mile urban walking trail have no doubt educated throngs of kids who then grew up to use the bricked or painted red line as a road map home.

Soviet-era Lada Cars Will Get You There … Slowly http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/soviet-era-lada-cars-will-get-you-there-slowly/ http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2013/04/soviet-era-lada-cars-will-get-you-there-slowly/#comments Sat, 13 Apr 2013 10:00:48 +0000 Kirit Radia http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/?p=100825
Before the stampede of luxury horsepower you find in Moscow today one car ruled Russia’s roads: the classic, boxy Lada. Now the old Soviet workhorse has finally been put out to pasture. The last ones rolled off the assembly line in September, including this one we took for a test drive at a Moscow dealership, making it one of the last classic Ladas ever produced.

The car never made it to the United States but it was hugely popular around Europe, Latin America and, of course, at home, where it was the only car available as a status symbol during the Soviet days. Over 18 million of them were sold around the world, making it one of the most popular cars in history.

Looking at its dated design, it’s hard to imagine the car is actually the 2012 model since the exterior is nearly identical to the model that debuted in 1980.

abc lada ll 130412 wblog Soviet era Lada Cars Will Get You There ... Slowly

ABC News

The design was actually based on a 1960s Fiat, but other than a couple of minor changes over the years, Lada didn’t really do much with it. But there’s a reason this car was so successful. It was really cheap to buy and cheap to fix. That was a good thing, considering the car’s reliability was infamously poor.

Today the classic Lada still has its boxy headlights, metal bumper, four doors and a set of tires. And that’s about it. Under the hood it has a 1.7 liter 4 cylinder engine that pumps out 73 horsepower. It tops out at 90 miles per hour, and it goes 0-60 in a lethargic 17 seconds.

The doors are a bit tricky; it requires a few attempts to get the flexible plastic handles to open. And the interior isn’t much better. Inside the car it’s just as basic, with plastic and metal bits sticking out. There’s no satellite navigation, no air conditioning, not even a radio. You do get a cigarette lighter and a steering wheel, but no power steering.

In Photos: The Coolest, Most Expensive, or Rare Cars

But what do you expect from a car that only costs $8,000? You still see plenty of them on the road in Russia today and customers are jumping for the last ones. The dealer we visited expected his last shipment of classic Ladas to be gone in a week.

But there’s still one important question, how does it drive? The answer reminds me of an old joke: What’s the difference between a Lada and a golf ball? You can drive a golf ball 200 yards.
