Million Moms Challenge was delighted to sit down with the three power hosts of the White Ribbon Alliance’s Breakfast Monday: Sarah Brown, wife of former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Arianna Huffington, media doyenne, and top fashion designer Donna Karan.
The breakfast featured frontline healthworkers from Africa and Asia, and Dr. Julie Gerberding, president, Merck Vaccines, the former head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The discussions highlighted the urgent need for 3.5 million more health workers to save the lives of pregnant women, mothers and their newborns around the world.
The White Ribbon Alliance is an international coalition pushing for changes that will make pregnancy and childbirth safe for women and newborns around the world. Their work in over 152 countries helps women like 17-year-old Denise from Haiti, whose life as an indentured servant left her with no possessions to call her own. When she became pregnant, White Ribbon Alliance volunteers helped ensured she delivered her baby safely, and offered her support so she did not have to labor alone.
Every day, 1,000 girls and women needlessly die in pregnancy and childbirth around the world. WRA works on the ground to help improve maternal care in the neediest places.
