Before becoming a parent, good health was definitely a priority for me, but it was more about superficial reasons like wanting to look good in a swimsuit. Sure, I knew that I would have more energy if I worked out regularly. I knew that eating a cleaner diet would result in clearer skin. I knew about the benefits that I would gain from living a healthy lifestyle, but they just didn’t resonate with me like they did when I knew I was going to become a parent.
As soon as I became pregnant, eating healthy and getting the proper amount of exercise became more about my child and less about me. As I felt that little bean of mine growing inside me, I knew I had to give him the best head start that I could and that meant making sure he was getting the nutrients he needed. On that same note, by staying active, it ensured that I would have a quicker recovery from childbirth which meant I would be up and around sooner and able to cope with the physical demands that breastfeeding and getting little sleep put on a woman’s body.
Now that my son is three and I’m expecting his brother or sister, being healthy for them has become even more important. I want them to have their mama as long as they possibly can. I want to be by their sides for all those important milestones they are sure to experience. I want to dance at their weddings. I want to help them with their own children as my own mother has with mine.
I don’t have a crystal ball and I can’t predict what will happen in the future, but I do know that by eating cleanly and staying fit, I’ve done everything that I can. And, hopefully, I can pass on the importance of good health to my kiddos, so they will be healthy and strong for their children too!
