Is THIS TV AD FOR FOLGER’S COFFEE real? Yikes. It doesn’t make me want to drink Folger’s. (hat tip, Andrew Sullivan.)

Cristal-swigging rapper Jay-Z picked up a copy of The Economist the other day (?) and read an article called "Bubbles and Bling," in which Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roederer, Cristal’s parent company, discussed the popularity of his company’s champagne with the hip-hop set. Asked if the use of Cristal by the rap crowd was detrimental to the brand, Rouzand said, "That’s a good question, but what can we do? We can’t forbid people from buying it. I’m sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

Jay-Z WAS OFFENDED. "It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud, views the ‘hip-hop’ culture as ‘unwelcome attention,’ " Mr Z said in a statement. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including the 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

Of slightly more consequence, Senate Democrats are introducing resolutions to bring US troops home from Iraq.

Today Democratic Sens. John Kerry (MA), Russ Feingold (WI), and Barbara Boxer (CA) will offer an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill setting a specific deadline of July 1, 2007 for troops to be out of Iraq. The date originally was December 31, 2006, but Kerry changed it yesterday. ….

David Chalian of the ABC News Political Unit reports that this morning, responding to GOP critics who says Dems want to "cut and run," Kerry on the Don Imus radio show said "this Administration wants to have a fake debate…’cut and run, ‘ ‘cut and run,’ ‘cut and run,’ ‘cut and run’. . . They found their three words….Their plan is ‘lie and die.’"

Michigan Dem Sen. Carl Levin’s bill tried to take a less immediate approach, calling for the beginnings of troop withdrawal, which GOP Senator Mitch McConnell (KY) called a "cut and jog."

Hmmph.

The mythos of Superman is so well-established that one can read almost anything revisionist into it: your “Nightline” report clearly showed that aspects of Superman’s “life” could be interpreted as gay (hiding his real identity behind a facade), messianic (dedicating himself to save mankind from supervillains), adventurous (exploring new worlds and performing superhuman feats humans cannot), and even romantic (having not only a longstanding romance with Lois Lane but also many brief encounters with other women, usually villainesses). This mythos is what makes the character so enduring and, well, super!
I never thought I’d see a rap “artist” offended, since they deal in such raunch themselves. The remaining question is will Louis Roederer’s business suffer because of the boycott? I somehow doubt it, but let’s ask Donald Trump to be sure.
As for your last item (and you’re absolutely right in that it is of only slightly more consequence), don’t the politicians know that the public clearly sees through the so-called “debate” Congress is currently in the throes of? It would be a matter of grave importance if this farce were truly a debate in anything more than name only. Instead, it’s merely a Republican gambit designed to embarrass the Democrats and provide ammunition for their campaigns. It is “much sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

There goes Russ Feingold, making sense again. Would somebody from the DLC please derail him before he puts some starch back in the Democrats’ skivvies? Give us more “centrist” Democrats!!

The only sacrifice that the Republicans in Congress and the executive branch are prepared to make is… nothing. There is no draft, so none of their fat-cat relatives is going to be doing hard time in Iraq or anywhere. Their taxes were cut, they pockets are lined with fools gold and they’re sitting pretty. If only the Democrats, or somebody, would call for a national military draft and some call to a collective national sacrifice to fight this fiasco of a war, watch how quickly the right wing nuts who are all for the war as long as their kids’ lives are not on the line, would back track.

Once again, sophilly, right on. If the family members of the millionaires in Congress were subject to being sent to fight in this debacle, you can be sure we never would have gone to Iraq in the first place.

I would like a law passed in the senate and house of representatives. It would state that if you vote to go to war with a nation your children or your grandchildren must go to the country we are at war with and fight with all the children that are fighting. I guess we would have to include our daughters as well as our sons. You cannot be allowed to run for office unless you have children. LOL Let us see if that would ever occur…..
