RICK WANTS ONE WHIZ-WITH
Senator Rick Santorum, R-Penn., the conservative in the fight of his life to hold onto his Pennsylvania Senate seat, represents a Blue State, but blogs on a site called REDSTATE.COM
So how can he go at his opponent, anti-abortion Democrat and state scion Bob Casey Jr? Santorum has decided to make immigration reform an issue, and one of the ways he’s doing that is by POPPING BY GENO’S STEAK in South Philly.
The owner of Geno’s, you may RECALL FROM PREVIOUS BLOG POSTINGS, has put up an English-only sign at his shop and cheesed himself into the national immigration debate as a result.
As the Philly Daily News reports, Santorum told one of its reporters, "It makes all the sense in the world to have a sign like this. There’s not really an extensive menu here. I mean, come on, it’s cheesesteaks, onions, et cetera. It’s not that hard."
Recent Santorum radio ads say Casey "joined with Ted Kennedy and other liberals in supporting a bill that grants amnesty to millions who’ve entered our country illegally… . That’s just not fair." A Santorum WEB AD also pushes this issue.
Interestingly, as the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER POINTS OUT, Santorum is taking this approach in a bilingual direction. "Dando la amnistía … ridiculiza y degrada los sacrificios de inmigrantes legales," it says on his website. Translated: "Giving amnesty … mocks and demeans the sacrifices of legal immigrants."
Some horserace latest — a STRATEGIC VISION POLL taken June 9-11 indicates that Casey is at 49%, Santorum 40%. Two-term incumbent Senator Santorum has 49% disapproving of his job performance, 46% approving.
As the SANTORUM BLOG — which says it is unaffiliated with the senator’s campaign — points out, the poll also shows:
"9. Do you favor granting amnesty to illegal immigrants currently living in the United States?
Yes 14%
No 83%
Undecided 3%"
and
"10. Do you favor building a wall at the southern border of the United States to secure the southern border with Mexico?
Yes 78%
No 11%
Undecided 11%"
Aha!

Santorum personifies all that is wrong with the current Congress today: pandering to gain votes, misrepresenting others’ positions, using partisanship to divide for his own gains, desperately grabbing photo ops and sound-bite ops wherever he can find them, and, in short, acting like a cretin. Whether he wins or loses, Santorum will be forever remembered for something which columnist Dan Savage (writing in Seattle’s “The Stranger”) named after him. (Google the senator’s surname, and the first hit tells all.) A fitting tribute to such a mediocrity!

We can file this cheesesteak thing under “Things That Aren’t Helping”
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports today that Casey has an 18-point lead over Santorum in latest poll.
