Weekend GMA
EmailWhew! I subbed for Weekend Good Morning America anchor Bill Weir this weekend. Lots of fun, but those 4 am wakeup calls are tough. The team on that show is great, though. Dedicated and determined to put on a fantastic show each day, rolling with all the breaking news while also preparing for a news-free weekend.
This week there were tons of hard news stories plus of course some lighter features….So in addition to all the breaking news stories out of Lebanon (where reporters such as David Wright and Wilf Dinnick are doing amazing work), Kate Snow interviewed Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, an editor at TMZ.com, which broke the Mel Gibson story, and a realtor to talk about the housing market…
I interviewed the physician of embattled Tour de France winner Floyd Landis, "Desperate Housewives" vixen Nicollette Sheridan, and Republican National Committee spokesman Brian Jones (CLICK HERE FOR THE VIDEO).
I asked Jones about the challenges Republicans face this Fall, the candidates who seem to be running away from the GOP label, and comments Dean had made the day before on GMA about Iraq.
Most interestingly, Jones said the way Republicans would try to keep control of the House and Senate would be to sell the threefold argument that:
1) a Democratic Congress will raise taxes,
2) "cut and run" from Iraq, and
3) proceed with impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
What might accurately be called negative campaigning. Or, in a conservative’s view, an accurate reminder.

President Bush has presided over what has effectively been the most taxing event on every American in the last 50 years; the increase in energy prices. It’s curious that the GOP thinks they will be able to get away with the same old tired “tax and spend” mantra against the Democrats when we have an enormous deficit, created on their watch, we have gross budget overruns on Iraqi reparations contracts by contractors who are cozy with the administration, and we have the obvious buying of influence by lobbyists like Jack Abramoff, whose influence went all the way to the top of this administration even before Bush took office.
I hope the Democrats won’t waste time trying to impeach Bush; they’d be better served taking control of the Senate and the House and reversing some of his policies, which would be more important to the country than spending two years not getting him impeached.

Also saw your report on the Negro League baseball players finally being inducted into the Hall of Fame (a long-overdue honor!) on WN yesterday evening–you’ve obviously been very busy this weekend putting out high-quality news items!
I agree with Eamon in that the Republicans’ tired old strategy about “tax-and-spend” Democrats won’t wash this year in comparison to the “spend-like-a-drunken-sailor,” “sell the government to the highest-paying lobbyist,” and “cozy up to military contractors” record of the Republicans. As usual, it looks like the Republicans are going to try to play on voters’ fears, but the biggest fear that they won’t play on is the Republicans’ own continued control of Congress!

I wish everyone would remember that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is His chosen land so I would watch what I said about Jews. I think the enemy of this world is responsible for wars, not a particular nationality.

Since the current administration intercepts calls of private citizens, will they be able to interfer with the next presidental elections. I have not heard anyone speak on this matter.
