Providence

In Rhode Island right now with producer Richard Coolidge; we’re working on a spot about the tough primary (and possibly general election) to be faced by Sen. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I.

Chafee is swimming against a tide of anti-incumbency (GOP challenger Stephen Laffey, the scrappy mayor of Cranston, constantly mentions how both Chafee and Democratic nominee Sheldon Whitehouse are members of the state’s five founding families — a patriarchal dis). And Chafee, as a liberal New England Republican, is something of an endangered species, as were conservative Southern Democrats in the 1990s. And perhaps Joe Lieberman falls into that category as well. … Without question, there are fewer moderates in both parties in D.C. these days. …

The first televised debate was last night. The attacks are coming fast and furious. The national GOP, convinced that only Chafee can hold on to the seat in this largely Democratic state, is trying to defeat Laffey and has launched a nasty attack ad against him. A Laffey win is entirely possible. …

We interviewed Laffey this morning at a Cranston coffee shop, and are now sitting at a Cumberland shopping mall waiting for Sen. Chafee. …

I always forget how working-class Irish and Italian this state is. How much more Laffey it is, if you will, than Chafee. Demographic-wise, not politically.

More later –

Jake

Yeah people from outside of new england perceive the area as elitist, populated by intelligentsia, academics and other limousine liberals. Once you get to know the area, you realize we’re more Mike Barnicle than John Kerry.
As for the sizable Irish electorate, what’d you expect from an area that continues to support Patrick Kennedy? It’s got to be blood, cause it certainly isn’t logic.
ps hope your time in Cranston is wicked pissah!!!

Rest assured, Whitehouse has many an AG skeleton in his closet the GOP will be addressing. He has a primary and the patrician will have to come past a middle class Marine veteran who lives progressive values… all the time, not just in an election year.

Dear Jake
Greetings from Mumbai (Bombay), India. Hope you don’t mind me using this mode to reach this mesage to you.
I am a journalist working with The Statesman, an English language daily newspaper. I am writing a book on Indian golf which will also touch on some of the controversial issues associated with the sport (for example, use of pesticides) worldwide. I wish to use some of the info provided in your excellent story “Poisoned fairways” that you did for Salon three years ago as well as quote you on the subject. With your permission, of course.
Would love to hear from you in this respect.
cheers

‘Tis pity that the moderates of both political parties are getting attacked more and voted out of office more by the populace than called for. It seems that the national political stage will be soon occupied only by screeching ideologues of the extreme wings of both parties, with no idea of what the word “compromise” means.
