Dem House Candidate Whose Son Was Abducted To Carry Party’s Child Safety Message

ABC’s Teddy Davis reports: Patty Wetterling, a Democratic House candidate whose son was abducted in 1989, will be holding a 5:00 pm ET conference call with reporters Wednesday.

Wetterling — whose Foley-related ad was an element on last night’s Nightline — has been tapped by national Democrats to deliver the party’s Saturday radio address.

Wetterling’s race was considered one of the 45 most competitive House seats in the country before Rep. Mark Foley’s (R-FL) resignation. Democrats are hoping that the increased attention on child safety issues will improve Wetterling’s chances. Even more importantly, because of her personal experience, Democrats view Wetterling as an ideal national spokesperson on child safety issues.

Wetterling is running in Minnesota’s sixth congressional district against Republican Michele Bachmann for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Mark Kennedy (R-MN) who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mark Dayton (R-MN).

Since her son’s abduction in 1989, Wetterling has worked with three presidents, including President Bush, to help pass critical child safety legislation, including sex offender registration laws and AMBER Alert.

Patty Wetterling may have national recognition on the issue of missing and exploited children, but her opponent in the race for the 6th Congressional district, Michelle Bachman, has a boatload of experience on the issue herself in raising 5 biological children and 23 (yes, that is twenty-three!!) foster children while also serving as leading advocate of children’s issues while sering in the Minnesota legislature. This race would be a VERY intresting race to highlight in view of recent news developments…..

Michelle Bachmann as a leading advocate for children’s issues? Since when did trying to get the gay marriage ban passed become a child safety issue. Because that is all that Bachmann is known for in Minnesota in my opinion. In fact, she sponsored the legislation that did not pass the Minnesota Senate even though her own stepsister is a lesbian. I guess hate is the strongest of all family values. If Wetterling was not in such a conservative district she would probably win easily, as it is now she will be close and this national attention can only help.
