Dean Touts ‘Phased Redeployment’

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: While appearing on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," DNC Chairman Howard Dean acknowledged that there are "wrinkles" of disagreement among Democrats on Iraq. The former Vermont governor stressed, however, that those "wrinkles" are just the "skin of the onion" and that there is an "underlying commonality."

Dean said Democrats are united around a strategy of phased redeployment which he said includes (1) bringing National Guard and Reserve members home "in a matter of months," (2) positioning an anti-terrorist "strike force" not in Iraq but in a "nearby friendly country," and (3) redeploying some U.S. troops currently in Iraq to Afghanistan.

Dean predicted that Democratic gains in Congress would be seen as a "signal for a new direction" despite Vice President Cheney’s recently telling Stephanopoulos that the midterm elections would not impact the President’s Iraq policy.

DNC Chairman Dean’s ideas sound a lot better then the meatgrinder we are stuck in. Our National Guard and Reserves should be brought home quickly. Neighboring nations should stand up and help Iraq until it can stand up for itself. They all complain about our being there but none of them are willing to really sacrifice the way our troops have. Either put up or shut up, Middle East! It’s time they pulled their fair share of the burden.
Enough is enough, we need to get out as soon as possible and make Iraq start fending for itself.
Keeping a force in Kuwait or somewhere else nearby is the way to go.
