Fmr. VA Gov. Mark Warner to George Allen: Concede

Chris Francescani, of the ABC News Law and Justice Unit, Reports: Here are some of the highlights of a conference call former Virginia Governer Mark Warner conducted about the Virginia Senate race where he addressed the recount.

Referring to him as "Senator-elect Webb,"  former VA Governor Mark Warner said that "Jim Webb will announcing some of the members of his transition team before the close of business today,"  on conference call with reporters.

Warner was subtle but clear in his suggestion that Allen forego a recount.

"That’s a decision for Senator Allen to make,’’ Warner said when asked if Allen should concede, but went on to note that Virginia Democrats "feel very good about the [recount] process.]"

"Virginia has gone through this before…I would look back at recent recounts," Warner said. "Races in recent times where the margins have been even a few hundred votes, where folks came out on the short end, they chose not to [challenge with a recount]. But again that will Senator Allen’s decision."

Webb campaign attorney Marc Elias noted on the call that "you typically see very few changes" between the original vote count and the recount."

Warner’s advice should be marked. Even if it does not cost Allen for the recount, it will cost good Virginians. With the chances of a different outcome practially zero, it would be best to spare the tax dollars.

The vote is over. Webb won. Easily. By at least 7,000 votes. No recount is going to make up 7,000 votes. Allen needs to concede, and allow Virginia, and the nation, to heal from this 6 year conservative train wreck.
