Unfair to Air Schwarznegger Flicks?
USA Network is showing a Schwarzenegger flick right now, "End of Days."
Not that his gubernatorial re-election bid is all that competitive, but is it fair to show a flick like that on election day?
You may recall this came up AS AN ISSUE three years ago during the California recall election, when local channels didn’t air Schwarzenegger flicks, such as they are, because of fears they might trigger the FCC’s equal time provision and thus be forced to give then-Gov. Gray Davis (D) free air time. (Cable channels like USA are not covered by the FCC rule).
The issue came up years before when Ronald Reagan was running for governor and reruns of "Death Valley Days" were kept from airing. Schwarzenegger’s Democratic opponent, Phil Angelides, took issue with Jay Leno giving Schwarzenegger free air time last month by interviewing him on the Tonight Show. The FCC REJECTED that complaint.

Of course it’s unfair to show such a movie as “End of Days,” but not for any reasons pertaining to equal time. After watching that movie, anyone who appreciates good storytelling, vivid characters, fine acting, excellent direction, and a great plot would vote AGAINST Schwarzenegger, since his performance and the film itself were major stinkers. Roger Ebert said “‘End of Days’ involves a head-on collision between the ludicrous and the absurd.” Just like this election season, I guess.
