Jefferson on the air

One of the most covered congressman by this reporter, Rep. William Jefferson, D-LA, TAKES OUT A TV AD in his pending general election race. (Louisiana has this crazy run-off system, you may recall, so its election season stretches into December.)

"I have never accepted a bribe from anyone," says the congressman in whose freezer the FBI allegedly found $90,000.

He then hammers his opponent for being too liberal for Louisiana.

You might recall the story we also broke from Katrina’s hurricane zone last year explaining how JEFFERSON USED THE NATIONAL GUARD to retrieve his personal items while the city he represents was flooded and his constituents died.

Or the STORY we did on the FBI probe into his activities…(VIDEO AVAILABLE HERE — don’t miss the Watergate-esque stand-up.)

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

I think most people are woefully misinterpreting and misunderstanding Rep. Jefferson’s actions. Isn’t it obvious that he just wanted a supply of cold cash around, which is why he put the money in his freezer? He also probably never accepted a bribe from anyone–the obscene amount of money he received is undoubtedly gifts from grateful constituents for doing such an exemplary job in Congress. And I’m sure he felt he simply had to use National Guard troops to rescue valuable items–for his constituents–during last year’s floods.
Were I a voter in Louisiana in this election, I don’t think I’d be saying “Laissez les bon temps rouler,” but, rather, “Merde! Il essaye de me baiser.”
