Several US Embassies Warn of Anti-American Protests

ABC News’ Jason Ryan Reports: Several U.S. Embassies around the world have issued Warden Messages, with nearly identical language, warning travelers of the problems they are likely to encounter due to the death sentence imposed on Saddam Hussein by the Iraqi High Tribunal.

According to a US government counter-terrorism source, the US Embassies in Turkey, Ireland, UK and Congo have alerted Americans that anti-American rallies may be held in their countries as the execution of Hussein draws near.

One of the Warden Messages, dated December 29, 2006, reads:

"The Appeals Chamber of the Iraqi High Tribunal affirmed the death sentence for the ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein after being found guilty of crimes against humanity. Despite this being an Iraqi decision, Saddam’s execution may prompt unrest and anti-American demonstrations. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the area of any demonstrations and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.

"For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department’s web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and Public Announcements can be found. Up-to-date information on safety and security is available toll free at 1-888-407-4747, or at regular toll rates at 1-202-501-4444 for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

"Americans living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security where they are traveling. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
