I saw your excellent report on the game of political one-upsmanship which the junior senators from New York and Illinois are playing and found Cokie Rpberts’ comments to be an insightful summary of the situation. I suppose I’m not as concerned as to why the senators are introducing legislation designed to reign in the President’s uncontrolled waging of his dirty little war, just more concerned that the legislation accomplishes something to bring Congress back to their rightful role as overseer, a role which the Repubs whot controlled Congress gleefully abandoned long ago.
As for the legislation passed by the House in their first 42 hours, I think most of it is symbolic and its success dependent on how it is received in the Senate. Whether it will pass the Senate without being altered significantly, and especially whether it will be signed by the President, are questions whose answers have yet to be made.

There’s quite a bit of “working the ref” stuff coming from conservative groups, demanding negative coverage of Pelosi before she even took the gavel, or be branded liberal. I hope journalists wait until Pelosi does something worth criticizing before they lay into her. I would even suggest being open to a rather unsettling possibility: that she will do a good job.
Ripping her apart to appease red meat conservatives is not balance. It’s like writing a scathing indictment of Holyfield’s unsportsmanlike behavior for biting Tyson’s ear off, just to balance the scales.
For four years, you’ve refused to call the GOP to the matt for biting people’s ears off. Let’s not accuse Pelosi of biting people’s ears off, just because we figured out the GOP is corrupt on our own.
