Gilmore Continues ’08 Push

ABC News’ Tahman Bradley Reports: James Gilmore, former governor of Virginia and former head of the Republican National Committee, filed papers with the Federal Elections Commission today in anticipation of a run for the 2008 Republican nomination for president, according to an FEC source.

Gilmore announced last month that he would like to assess his chances in the Republican nomination battle because there was no true conservative in the 2008 race. A website not authorized by Gilmore, draftgilmore.org, declares Gilmore as the only true conservative running for president.

Gilmore is relatively unknown to the country, and it remains to be seen whether his push to court conservatives by emphasizing his anti-tax record as governor will be enough to mount a serious nomination fight with candidates who have enormous national stature and fundraising prowess like Arizona Senator John McCain former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
