Snow on Senate Resolutions: ‘No Real Surprises’

ABC News’ Karen Travers Reports: Asked about the Senate Foreign Relations Committee resolution passed yesterday, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said there were "no real surprises."  Snow said the President understands that people have political concerns but he is asking them to give it a chance to work.

Vice President Cheney told CNN yesterday that a Senate resolution opposing the Bush Iraq strategy won’t stop the White House and would be "detrimental from the standpoint of the troops."

"We are moving forward. We are moving forward. The Congress has control over the purse strings. They have the right, obviously, if they want, to cut off funding. But in terms of this effort, the President has made his decision," Cheney said. "We’ve consulted extensively with them.  We’ll continue to consult with the Congress.  But the fact of the matter is, we need to get the job done."

Snow said the White House is not worried about the party splitting over Iraq but they believe that the President’s plan is the best way to achieve the U.S. objectives in Iraq.

Essentially saying "bring it on" to members of Congress, Snow said that if they have a better proposal for achieving success in Iraq, they should send it to the White House.

"You have a patriotic obligation and you can do the whole nation a service," he said. Snow said the White House is not lobbying members of Congress on the Iraq resolutions, but is "talking with them" about their concerns.

Tomorrow, the President speaks to the House Republican Conference and Snow said he did not expect Iraq to dominate the meeting. He said the House Republicans want to talk about the other issues from the State of the Union–issues such as health care, immigration, energy, and education–as well as Iraq.
